Unjha psyllium husk manufacturers: what to check

What to check at Unjha psyllium husk manufacturers and Gujarat psyllium husk exporters: processor or trader, purity controls, and batch records.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

When you look at Unjha psyllium husk manufacturers, the first check is whether the company processes husk in its own plant or only sells it. Gujarat psyllium husk exporters include both, and the difference decides who controls purity, batch records and consistency.

Unjha is the centre of the world's psyllium trade. You will find many companies there, and the names on offers do not always match the plants behind them.

Processor or trader: how to tell

A processor owns the cleaning, sieving and grading machinery. Ask for the plant address and a recent video of the working line, and ask how many production lines it runs. A trader will often be vague about this, or point you to a plant it does not own.

A trader is not necessarily a problem if you know that is what you are buying from. The risk is paying a processor's price to a middleman and not being able to fix quality at source. How to tell a trader from a manufacturer gives the questions to ask.

What to look at in the plant

The checks below follow our post on auditing a psyllium processing plant, which walks through the visit in order.

  • The cleaning and sieving lines, where seed, dust and foreign matter are removed to reach the purity you ordered.
  • Metal detection and magnets on the packing line, and a record of when they were last checked.
  • Batch coding on every bag, so a bag in your container can be traced back to a production day.
  • Dry, covered storage for finished husk, because husk absorbs moisture and swells.
  • A quality laboratory or a regular arrangement with an outside one, with results on file.

Documents and claims to verify

Ask for food safety and quality certificates, and confirm each with the body that issued it, because copies are easy to edit. Ask for a certificate of analysis on the lot you will buy, with the test methods named. If the supplier claims organic, kosher, halal or gluten-free status, ask for the certificate and check the scope covers the product and the site.

Also ask about allergens and cross-contact on the site, since some plants handle several products on shared equipment. Read our guide to comparing quotes from different psyllium processors before you decide on price alone.

Psyllium ends up in food and supplements, so the importer must meet the rules of the destination market. Confirm what applies with your regulator or adviser.

Test the claim with a lot sample

Ask also how the processor handles complaints. A good plant keeps retention samples from each lot, answers questions about batch records and accepts a third-party inspection at loading. If it refuses any of those, treat that as information.

A visit shows what a plant can do. A tested sample shows what it did on the lot you are buying. Have an independent laboratory measure purity, swell volume, ash and microbiology, and compare the result with what the supplier promised.

Do this before you fix a contract, and again on the pre-shipment sample. We do not publish prices, because they depend on purity, mesh and quantity.
