How do I compare quotes from different psyllium processors?

Put every quote on the same spec, grade, pack, Incoterm and payment term, then compare landed cost per usable kilo. A cheap quote often hides a lower grade or weaker testing.

To compare psyllium quotes fairly, send every mill the same written specification, then check that each quote covers the same grade, tests, pack, Incoterm and payment term. Only then compare the landed cost per kilo.

Psyllium quotes can look close but describe different products. A 98% husk from one mill and a 98% husk from another may differ in swell volume, LEM, microbiology and sterilisation. The general method is in how to compare quotes from different Indian exporters. Here is what to check for psyllium.

Start with one spec

Do not ask for "your best price for psyllium husk". Send a spec with grade, purity, swell volume, LEM, ash, moisture, mesh for powder, microbiology and safety tests. If you do not have one yet, see how to write a specification for psyllium husk powder. Ask each mill to confirm it can meet every line, or to say where it cannot.

Line up the quotes

  • Product and grade: husk, powder or seed, and the purity grade, stated the same way.
  • Swell volume and LEM: the values each mill will guarantee, not just typical figures.
  • Treatment: untreated, steam sterilised, or irradiated, and where it is done.
  • Testing: which tests are included, which lab does them and who pays.
  • Pack: bag type, liner, net weight, pallets and marking.
  • Quantity per container: mills that load more per container lower your freight per kilo.
  • Incoterm: ex works, FOB Mundra or Pipavav, or CIF to your port.
  • Payment term: advance, balance against documents, or letter of credit.
  • Validity: how long the price holds, which matters in a moving market.
  • Shipment date: when the goods will actually be ready.

Convert to landed cost

Bring every quote to the same point, usually your warehouse. Add freight, insurance, duty, clearance and inland transport where the quote does not include them. Then divide by the usable kilos you will receive. The difference between Incoterms is explained in what FOB Mundra or CIF Rotterdam includes.

Include the cost of your own testing and the cost of a rejected lot. A mill with a slightly higher price but steady results can cost less over a year.

Red flags in a psyllium quote

  • A price well below the others for the same stated grade, with no clear reason.
  • Specs given only as "typical", with no guaranteed limits.
  • No mention of swell volume or LEM.
  • A company that cannot name its mill or will not allow a visit.
  • A large advance requested before any sample is approved.
  • A certificate of analysis that looks identical across different lots.

Look beyond price

Ask each mill for its last few shipments' test results for the same grade. Ask which markets it ships to and whether it has had claims. Consistency across lots matters more than a good first sample.

How we help

We send your spec to several audited psyllium mills, put their offers on one landed-cost sheet and point out where they differ. We also test shortlisted samples at an NABL-accredited lab so you compare products, not just prices. Ask for a free sourcing review.
