Castor oil in Kadi and guar gum in Banaskantha: the plant belts

Gujarat castor oil manufacturers cluster around Kadi, and Banaskantha guar gum manufacturers sit in the north: what the belts are and how to vet a plant.

Gujarat castor oil manufacturers cluster in the north of the state, with Kadi, in Mehsana district, one of the best-known places for castor seed crushing and refining. Banaskantha guar gum manufacturers operate in the same dry north, where guar is grown and processed.

These are industrial belts, so the buying questions are about the process: does the plant crush or process itself, and what grade can it make consistently?

The castor oil belt around Kadi

Kadi castor oil plants crush castor seed, filter the oil and refine it to the grade a buyer needs. India is the world's main supplier of castor oil, and Gujarat has a large share of the crushing, as explained in why India is the world's main supplier of castor oil.

Plants differ in what they make. Some produce the standard industrial grade, others make refined or cosmetic grades, and some convert oil into derivatives such as hydrogenated castor oil. Ask each plant which grades it makes every month, not which it could make in principle.

The guar belt in the north

Guar is grown across Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana, and processing plants sit near the growing areas. Banaskantha guar gum manufacturers and others in north Gujarat take cleaned guar seed, split it, separate the endosperm and mill it into powder of a stated viscosity and mesh.

Where guar gum is produced in India describes the producing regions. Because plants make different grades, confirm that the one you contact makes food, pharma or industrial grade as you need it, and ask for a recent certificate of analysis.

How to vet a plant in either belt

Our post on what a factory audit should contain gives the structure for a visit.

  • Confirm the plant address and that the company owns the process equipment, with photographs or a visit.
  • Ask for a certificate of analysis on the actual lot, with test methods named, and compare it with your own laboratory's results.
  • Check food safety or quality certificates against the issuing body if the product is for food use.
  • Ask what the plant does with off-grade product, so you know it is not blended back into your lot.
  • Ask about pesticide and ethylene oxide residues if you sell into the EU, and confirm the current limits with your customs broker.

Why the grade matters more than the town

Ask for sample production runs to your specification where possible. A plant that can make the grade once under supervision can usually make it again, while a plant that offers only a shelf sample may not have the line to repeat it. Confirm lead times with the plant as well, since crushing and drying depend on seed arrivals.

A town name does not tell you the grade. The same belt supplies cheap industrial product and carefully made food grade, and the plants are not the same. Write your specification first, then look for plants that already make that grade.

Costs follow the crop, the grade and the quantity, so we do not publish figures. A real quote needs your specification.
