The cheapest way to test new jewellery designs is to start from the maker's existing designs, or small variations of them in plating colour, stone colour or length, because these can be made in small quantities without new moulds or dies. Order a small run of each, sell them, and measure sell-through and returns before you invest in custom designs and larger quantities.
A fully custom design needs a new master, mould or die, which raises both the cost and the minimum order. That is a step to take after a test, not before.
Ways to keep the test small
- Choose from the maker's running range; many Rajkot workshops have hundreds of current designs.
- Vary what is cheap to vary: plating colour, stone colour, chain length, packaging.
- Ask for the maker's lowest MOQ on stock designs, which can be a few dozen pieces per design.
- Test several designs at a time, so you learn which style sells, not just whether one piece does.
- Use air freight or courier for the test, then sea freight for proven designs if volumes justify it.
What to measure
Decide in advance what counts as success. Useful measures are sell-through over a fixed period, the share sold at full price, return rates and reasons, and customer comments on weight, comfort and finish. For online sellers, conversion rate and click-through on the listing are early signals.
Give the test enough time and visibility. A design that was listed late, poorly photographed or hidden on your site has not been tested.
From test to production
When a design proves itself, place a repeat at a larger quantity, ask for a better price per piece and tighten the specification based on what you learned from returns. If you want your own version of a successful style, now is the time to pay for a custom mould. Agree ownership of the mould before it is made.
Keep the approved test piece as a sealed counter-sample. The larger order should match it, or improve on it in agreed ways.
What this means for a buyer
Test small, measure honestly and scale what works. For typical minimums, see the MOQ per design for imitation jewellery. Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We find makers willing to run small tests, check the test pieces and help you scale the winners. Start with a free sourcing review.
