For existing designs, Rajkot makers typically accept from a few dozen to around 100 to 300 pieces per design, depending on the product and the workshop. For a new design or your own custom piece, the MOQ is usually higher, often several hundred pieces, because a new master, mould or die has to be made and paid for.
These figures are indicative. Every maker sets its own minimum, and most will negotiate on a first order if the range is interesting.
What drives the MOQ
- New moulds or dies: a custom design carries a one-time tooling cost that the maker wants to spread over enough pieces.
- Plating batches: plating lines run in batches, so each colour, such as gold, rose gold or rhodium, often has its own minimum per design.
- Stones: special colours or sizes of CZ, kundan or pearls may need to be bought in bulk.
- Product type: small studs and rings often have higher piece MOQs than heavy necklace sets.
- Packaging: printed boxes, cards and pouches usually have their own minimums, often higher than the jewellery itself.
MOQ per design, per colour or per order
Always ask how the minimum is counted. Some makers set a minimum per design, some per design and colour, and some an overall order value across many designs. A quote of 100 pieces per design may become 300 if you want it in three platings.
How to start smaller
Choose from the maker's existing designs rather than new ones, keep to one plating colour per design for the first order, and use plain stock packaging. Many buyers test 20 to 40 designs at low quantities, then reorder the best sellers at full MOQ with custom plating and branded packaging.
Agree in writing that the bulk order will match the approved sample, and keep a sealed counter-sample to compare against.
What this means for a buyer
Ask every maker for MOQ per design, per colour and for packaging separately, so quotes can be compared fairly.
