Private label jewellery from India: how it works

Private label jewellery from India means a maker produces pieces under your brand. White label, private label and OEM differ in who owns the design. Here is how each works.

Private label jewellery from India means a manufacturer makes pieces that carry your brand, usually from its own or a shared design. White label jewellery is generic stock with your label added. OEM means the maker builds to your own design. The difference lies in who owns the design and the tooling.

Jewellery brand manufacturers in India offer all three, and one workshop often offers more than one.

White label, private label and OEM compared

These terms are used loosely, so confirm what a supplier means before you rely on them.

  • White label: the supplier's existing designs are sold under your name, with little or no change. Other brands may sell the same piece.
  • Private label: the supplier's designs are adjusted for you, for example in colour, stone or finish, and you may get exclusivity on your version if agreed.
  • OEM: you supply the design, and the supplier makes it to your specification. The design and, ideally, the tooling are yours.

What branding is practical

Plan the label work in parallel with production. Hang tags, pouches and boxes often take as long to arrange as the jewellery itself, and a delay in packaging can hold up the whole shipment. Send final artwork early, approve a printed proof, and check that tag text such as material descriptions is accurate for your market.

Common options are branded hang tags, packaging, a stamped logo or a small engraved tag on the piece. Stamping needs a tool, and engraving needs space on the piece, so ask early. Can you get your logo stamped or engraved on jewellery covers what works and what does not.

Branded packaging is usually separate from the jewellery, and may be made by a different supplier.

Who owns the mould or die

If the maker cuts a die for your design, ownership should be written down. Without that, the maker may reuse the die for other customers or refuse to release it if you leave. See who owns a jewellery mould or die for the clauses that matter.

Where possible, mark the die with your name or code and keep photographs of it on file.

How minimum quantities change

Private label orders often carry higher minimums than catalogue stock, since the factory sets up a separate run for your label, your packing and your quality checks. Read MOQ for private-label jewellery from Rajkot before you set a budget.

Compliance still sits with you

If you sell under your own brand, keep the supplier's identity and the production records on file. Marketplaces and authorities may ask who made the product, and a brand owner who cannot answer faces problems. Your supplier contract should require the factory to keep production records and to tell you before any change in materials.

When your name is on the piece, you are treated as the brand owner in many markets. That means you answer for restricted substances, labelling and marketing claims, regardless of where it was made. Confirm your obligations with your customs broker or the market regulator, and make sure the factory's materials match the tested sample.
