Gondal, Rajkot and Ahmedabad spice makers and exporters

Gondal chilli powder manufacturers, the Gondal market yard, Rajkot spice manufacturers and Ahmedabad spice exporters: what each does for an importer.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

Gondal is a market yard town, Rajkot is a grinding and processing centre, and Ahmedabad is where many Gujarat spice exporters have their offices. Gujarat spice exporters are therefore not one kind of supplier: some buy raw spice in the yard, some grind it in their own mills, and some only sell.

Knowing which is which tells you what each can promise. This post describes what each place does for a buyer.

Gondal: the market yard

The Gondal market yard is a regulated agricultural market where farmers sell dry chilli, garlic, coriander, cumin and other crops to traders in bulk. Gondal is especially known for chilli. Arrivals are heavy during the harvest months, and the rates are set by auction between traders.

The yard sells raw produce, so a yard purchase is a trade in the crop, not an export-grade product. Gondal chilli powder manufacturers buy from the yard and grind the pods in nearby mills. Their quality depends on how they clean and sort before grinding, and whether they steam-sterilise afterwards.

Rajkot: grinders and processors

Rajkot is a larger city with spice grinding, blending and packing units, as well as trading houses. Rajkot spice manufacturers typically take whole spices, clean them, grind them to a mesh you specify, and pack them in bulk or retail formats.

What matters for you is the line: grinding equipment, sieving, metal detection, steam sterilisation if needed, and a laboratory for routine tests. The post on how to choose between Rajkot, Gondal and Ahmedabad grinders goes into those checks.

Ahmedabad: exporters and packers

Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city and a base for exporters, freight forwarders and packers. Ahmedabad spice exporters may own a plant in the city or its outskirts, or they may be traders who source from the yards and processors above and arrange the paperwork.

Being in Ahmedabad says nothing about whether a company processes its own spices. That has to be checked by asking for the plant address and visiting it. How to tell a trader from a manufacturer explains the check.

Which one to approach

Most buyers end up with a processor for the product and an exporter or forwarder for the paperwork. The two can be the same company, but check. Which one you approach depends on what you need.

  • If you need whole spice and can test and clean it yourself, a yard-based trader may be enough, provided you test every lot.
  • If you need ground spice at a stated mesh with microbiology controls, approach a grinder with its own plant.
  • If you need mixed spices, labelling and shipping handled in one place, an exporter with a packing unit may suit you, as long as you know who grinds the product.

Finding the genuine ones

The best sources of confidence are an audit, a lot-level test and references from other overseas buyers. Our post on how to find genuine agri exporters in Gujarat covers the verification routine.
