Dehydrated onion manufacturers in Gujarat: where they are and how to check them

Most Gujarat dehydrated onion manufacturers are in Bhavnagar district around Mahuva, with others in Amreli and Rajkot. Check registrations, the real plant address and your own lab results.

Gujarat's dehydrated onion manufacturers are concentrated in the Saurashtra region, mainly in Bhavnagar district around Mahuva, with smaller groups in Amreli district near Rajula and in Rajkot district. To check one, confirm its public registrations, find and visit the plant that actually dries your onion, and test a sample from your own lot at an independent lab.

Gujarat is widely described as India's largest producer of white onion and of dried white onion products. A November 2024 report in The Federal estimated about 160 dehydration units in the state. Use that as a rough guide, not a census.

Where the manufacturers are

Outside Gujarat, onion is also dried in Maharashtra and some other states. Dehydrated onion from Maharashtra covers that region.

  • Bhavnagar district: the largest group, in and around Mahuva. See Bhavnagar district dehydration plants and our buyer's guide to Mahuva.
  • Amreli district: units around Rajula, close to Pipavav port and to the same white onion belt.
  • Rajkot district: some units, plus exporters and traders based in Rajkot city. Rajkot and Gondal are also important markets for fresh garlic, see Gondal and Rajkot garlic markets.
  • Offices elsewhere: some exporters list an Ahmedabad, Mumbai or Bhavnagar city address while the plant is in Saurashtra.

Check the public registrations first

Every genuine Indian food exporter has registrations you can verify yourself, before any visit. Ask for the numbers and check them on the official portals.

  • GST registration (GSTIN): search it on the government GST portal to see the legal name, status and principal place of business.
  • Importer Exporter Code (IEC): issued by DGFT and searchable on the DGFT website.
  • FSSAI licence: food business licence, checkable on the FSSAI licensing portal, with the licensed premises listed. Compare that address with the plant you are told about.
  • Export promotion council registration: dehydrated onion exporters usually hold an APEDA registration (RCMC). Garlic exporters may be registered with APEDA or the Spices Board. Ask which one and why.
  • Certificates such as BRCGS, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000: check the certificate number on the certification body's or scheme owner's public directory, and confirm the site address and scope.

Then check the plant

Registrations prove a company exists. They do not prove it dries onion. Ask for the plant address, a live video walkthrough of the lines and, before your first order, a physical visit or audit during the drying season. Our audit guide for Mahuva plants lists what to look at.

Ask what the plant makes on its own lines and what it buys in. Many Gujarat exporters mill powder from flakes bought from other units. That can be fine, but then your quality depends on a plant you have not seen. Trader vs processor explains the trade-offs.

Then check the product

Ask for a sealed sample from a real lot, with the lot number, and send it to an NABL-accredited lab that reports against your market's limits. For the EU, include pesticides and ethylene oxide. For the US, check the plant's FDA registration and whether it appears on any FDA import alert. Compare the result with the plant's own certificate of analysis. A large gap is a warning sign.

Specify the form, size, colour grade, moisture and microbiology in writing. Onion flakes vs minced vs granules vs powder helps you pick the form.

Signs worth a second look

  • The quoted plant address and the FSSAI licensed premises do not match.
  • No visit allowed in season, or only an office visit offered.
  • Certificates that cannot be found on the issuer's directory.
  • A certificate of analysis with no lot number or lab name.
  • Prices that do not move with the fresh onion crop when every other plant's do.
