Buying from Om Foods: what to check and how we help

Om Foods lists a dehydration plant about 4 km from Mahuva on IndiaMART. Public detail is limited, so here is what to ask before ordering and how we help.

According to its listing on IndiaMART, Om Foods operates a dehydration plant about 4 km from Mahuva in Gujarat, and its founders have traded raw onion and garlic for about five decades.

Creston & Co is not affiliated with Om Foods. This page is a buyer's guide based on public information.

What Om Foods says it makes

Its IndiaMART listing offers dehydrated white onion in kibbled, chopped, minced, granule and powder forms, dehydrated red onion powder, and dehydrated garlic as minced, granules and powder. It says it processes white, red and pink onion.

The listing describes a plant certified to ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000, written as "ISO 22000:5000", which looks like a typing error. It names a partner but does not state a legal entity type. A founding year is not stated: the "16 years" shown on the listing appears to be the length of its IndiaMART membership. Capacity, export markets and any BRCGS, FSSC 22000, Halal or Kosher certificate are not stated. We did not find a company website.

What to verify before you order

With a single directory listing as the main public source, the checks start with the basics. None of this suggests a problem with the company: it simply means you need to collect, early on, the information a larger exporter would usually publish on its own website.

  • Ask for the registered business name, GST number and IEC, so you know which entity you are contracting with.
  • Ask for the plant address and confirm it on the FSSAI manufacturing licence.
  • Ask for the current ISO 22000 certificate with the correct edition, the certification body and its accreditation. ISO 9001:2008 is a superseded edition, so ask whether a current certificate exists.
  • If your market needs BRCGS, FSSC 22000, Halal or Kosher, ask directly whether the plant holds any of them and check the numbers in the official registers.
  • Given the family background in raw onion trading, ask whether all forms are made in the plant or whether some, such as garlic, are bought in from other processors.
  • Test sealed samples at an independent NABL-accredited lab before agreeing a contract, including ethylene oxide and pesticide residues.
  • For the US, ask for the FDA food facility registration number.
