The price of a Rajkot diesel engine depends mainly on its size, the metal and machining inside it, and how carefully it is built and tested. Accessories, emission requirements, packing and order size then move the price up or down.
Two engines with the same horsepower can differ widely in price for good reasons, and for bad ones. A real quote comes only once your specification is clear.
The main cost drivers
- Raw materials, mainly cast iron for the block and head, and steel for the crankshaft and camshaft, whose prices move with world markets.
- Power and cylinder count, because a bigger engine uses more metal and machining time.
- Cooling and speed, because slow-speed water-cooled engines are heavier than high-speed air-cooled ones.
- Whether the crankshaft is forged or cast, and how it is hardened and ground.
- Starting method, with electric start adding a starter, battery and charging system.
- Fuel injection equipment, which is a large bought-in cost.
- Emission certification for your market, which may need extra parts, testing and approval work.
Factors that depend on the maker
Makers that cast and machine their own parts control quality better, but carry more overhead. Makers that buy parts and assemble can look cheaper, but quality varies with each parts supplier. Ask which parts are made in-house, as explained in how to tell a trader from a manufacturer.
Testing also costs money. A maker that runs every engine on a test bed under load charges more than one that only starts engines. That cost usually saves you more in field failures. Paint quality, rust protection and packing add cost in the same way, and pay back on arrival.
Why the lowest quote can cost more
A low price often hides a thinner casting, a cast crankshaft where you expected a forged one, or an engine that was never run under load. These savings show up later as field failures, warranty claims and lost dealers. Compare quotes only after you know what is inside each engine.
Ask each maker for a parts list with materials, a test record and the weight of the bare engine. Weight is a rough but useful check. A much lighter engine at the same rating usually has less metal somewhere important.
Factors you control
- Order quantity and how often you repeat it, since steady repeat orders let the maker plan castings and machining.
- Paint colour, branding and nameplates, which add set-up work.
- Accessories such as pulleys, couplings, tanks, silencers and base frames.
- Packing standard, from simple skids to full crates with VCI.
- Payment terms and the Incoterm, covered in FOB, CIF or DAP.
