What decides the price of lathes and power presses

The price of a lathe machine in India, a CNC lathe or a power press comes down to a few build choices. Here is what moves the quote and how to get a comparable one.

There is no honest single price for a lathe machine, a CNC lathe or a power press, because each is quoted against a specification. Two machines with the same name can differ by a wide margin once bed size, controller, accuracy and build quality are fixed.

We do not publish prices. This article explains what moves the quote on each machine, so you can ask for numbers that can be compared. A real quote comes from a sourcing review of your exact spec.

What decides the price of a conventional lathe?

A conventional lathe is priced mainly by size and by how heavy and rigid the casting is. Heavier beds cost more in iron and machining but hold accuracy longer.

These are the specification points that change the quote most:

  • Swing over bed and distance between centres, which set the largest part the machine can hold.
  • Spindle bore and motor power, which decide how much bar and how heavy a cut the machine can take.
  • Bed hardening and grinding, because induction-hardened and ground ways wear far more slowly than soft ones.
  • Accessories in the box, such as chucks, steady rests, tool posts and a coolant system.

What decides the price of a CNC lathe?

A CNC lathe adds a controller, servo drives, a turret and a slant or flat bed. The controller and drives are a large share of the cost, and the choice of control brand changes both price and spares support. See what drives CNC lathe prices and CNC controllers compared for the detail.

Axis count, live tooling, turret stations, a bar feeder and a tailstock each add cost. So do spindle bearings, linear guideways against box ways, and whether the ball screws are ground or rolled. Ask for the make of each major component in writing. If the controller is one thing on the brochure and another on the quote, that is a warning.

If you are unsure whether you need CNC at all, read conventional versus CNC lathes first.

What decides the price of a power press?

Power presses are priced mainly by tonnage, frame type and stroke. A C-frame press is cheaper to build than a straight-side press of the same tonnage, but it deflects more under load, which matters for close-tolerance work.

Other drivers are the clutch type (mechanical or pneumatic friction), bed and slide size, stroke per minute, the quality of the flywheel and crankshaft, and safety devices such as light curtains and two-hand controls. Exporters of presses should state the safety guarding supplied, because your own market's rules apply on arrival. Power press tonnage explains how to choose the rating.

How do you get a quote you can compare?

Send every maker the same one-page specification, and ask them to quote against it line by line. A quote that leaves out accessories, spares or the control make is not comparable with one that includes them.

Also state what you need on the commercial side: the Incoterm, test run at the works before dispatch, packing for sea freight, and warranty period. The FOB, CIF or DAP guide shows how the delivery term changes what a number covers.

Bearing price lists, valve price lists and fastener price per kg all depend on grade, size and standard. Here is how to ask for a quote against a spec instead of a list.
