Sourcing agent in Gujarat: what to check before you hire one

Gujarat suits a sourcing agent because so many export clusters sit in one state. Here is what to check, and why the agent's location matters less than the work.

A sourcing agent in Gujarat is useful if your product comes from one of the state's clusters, but where the agent sits matters less than whether they can reach your factory quickly and report honestly on it. Gujarat has ports, clusters and a long export habit, so there is no shortage of people who call themselves agents.

This article is about how to choose, not who to choose. We cannot rank firms, and any list that claims to is selling placement.

What Gujarat is known for making

Gujarat is a state of clusters, each centred on one product. As a rough guide, from stable public knowledge:

  • Morbi makes ceramic wall and floor tiles, slabs and sanitaryware, and is among the largest tile clusters in the world.
  • Unjha is the main market for cumin, fennel and other seed spices, and Mahuva is known for dehydrated onion and garlic.
  • Surat is a textile and diamond-polishing city, and Ahmedabad is a textile, dye and chemical centre.
  • Ankleshwar, Vapi and Vatva carry much of the state's chemical and dye production.
  • Rajkot and Jamnagar are known for engineering parts, castings and brass components.
  • Mundra, Kandla (Deendayal) and Pipavav are the ports most Gujarat cargo leaves from.

Does the agent need to be in Gujarat?

Only partly. What you need is a person who can be at the factory within a day, who knows what a good plant in that cluster looks like, and who can tell a trader from a maker. A Gujarat address is a convenience, not proof of any of these.

Agents with no local base can still do good work if they travel to the supplier. Agents with a local base can still do poor work if they never leave the office. Ask for the last three factory visits they made and what they found.

Questions to ask any agent in Gujarat

Put these in an email and keep the written answers.

  • Who pays you: me, the factory, or both? Get the answer in the contract, not on a call. See why use an agent paid by you.
  • Which registrations does your business hold, and can I check them? The list is in what registrations an Indian agent should have.
  • Can you show a redacted audit and inspection report from a past job in my product area?
  • Will I see the factory's name, the original lab report and the factory's own invoice?
  • Will I pay the factory directly, or does the money pass through you?
  • What happens if the lot fails inspection? The honest answer is in what happens if the goods fail inspection.

Red flags specific to cluster towns

In every Gujarat cluster there are traders who show you another firm's plant and quote a price that includes their margin. The tell is a supplier who cannot take you to the kiln, mill or reactor that makes your item on the day you ask. Read how to tell a trader from a manufacturer before your first visit.

A second warning sign is an agent who is paid by the factory and does not say so. Their shortlist then reflects who pays them, not who is best for you. Sourcing agent red flags lists others.

A simple decision rule

If your supplier is in Gujarat and your product is repeatable, a local inspector or agent working per order may be enough. If you are still choosing a supplier, or buying a product where quality varies by plant, an agent who audits first and inspects every lot saves more than they cost. In both cases, get the fee in writing before work starts.

Documents and ports

Most Gujarat cargo is trucked to a port within a day or so, which helps with lead times but leaves little room for a late fix. Ask your agent to confirm the document pack well before the truck leaves the factory. The document pack your broker will ask for lists what customs in your country will want.

How we work

We work across India, so we arrange audits and inspections wherever your supplier is, including across Gujarat's clusters. We find and audit manufacturers, send you a shortlist of five to ten real ones, check samples and documents, have lots tested, and supervise production and loading. You pay the factory directly, and we take nothing from factories. Our fee is one written amount agreed in advance. If you want to see how that would look for your product, book a free sourcing review.
