Psyllium, groundnut, castor and guar crop estimates for buyers

Where to find psyllium, groundnut, castor and guar crop estimates in Gujarat and India, how to read them, and what they cannot tell you.

A psyllium crop forecast, an isabgol production figure for Gujarat, a groundnut crop estimate, a castor crop estimate or a guar crop forecast is only as good as its source and its date. Official estimates come from central and state agriculture departments, and trade estimates come from industry associations and exporters. None of them is a promise.

This page explains where to look and how to read what you find. It does not give forecasts.

Psyllium (isabgol)

Psyllium is grown in north Gujarat and Rajasthan as a winter crop. Official isabgol area and production data is thinner than for major cereals, so trade estimates carry more weight. Treat them with care and compare several sources. How the harvest feeds through to supply is in when the psyllium harvest is and how it affects price.

Because the crop is concentrated in a small area, one bad week of weather can change the picture quickly. Rain at harvest is the particular risk. It damages seed and husk quality, and a crop that is large on paper can yield less good husk.

Groundnut

Groundnut is better covered by official data. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare publishes estimates, and Gujarat's agriculture department reports sowing progress in the monsoon. The oilseed trade association also runs crop surveys. Groundnut has more than one season, and the official figure may combine them, so check which crop a figure covers, and see the groundnut harvest season in Saurashtra.

For export peanuts, the crop total matters less than the share that is suitable for edible export grades, and aflatoxin risk rises when the harvest is wet.

Castor

Castor is a long-season crop, with picking spread over several months, so estimates are revised often. The industry association for solvent extractors publishes crop surveys for oilseeds, and the ministry publishes official estimates. The effect of the season is explained in how the castor seed harvest affects price.

Castor demand also comes from industry, so a stable crop can still see a change in supply to exporters if domestic crushers buy more.

Guar

Guar is a monsoon crop, and its yield is highly dependent on rainfall timing. Sowing area reports in July and August give the first signal, and harvest results arrive in the autumn. The guar harvest season describes the calendar.

Guar demand also depends on oil and gas drilling activity, so crop news explains only part of the supply picture. Ask your supplier how much of its seed is contracted and how much is bought on the open market.

How to use estimates

Compare at least two sources, note the date, and check whether the figure is area, production or yield. Then ask your supplier what it is seeing in the field and what stock it holds. Cost follows crop, quality, freight and currency, and a quote against your specification is the reliable comparison.
