Mahuva dehydrated onion and garlic manufacturers: a guide

How the Mahuva dehydrated onion manufacturers are organised, what Mahuva onion powder exporters offer, and how to pick a plant among Gujarat suppliers.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

Mahuva, on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, is the centre of India's dehydrated onion industry. Mahuva dehydrated onion manufacturers, Mahuva onion powder exporters and Mahuva dehydrated garlic suppliers are mostly separate plants, each running its own washing, slicing and drying, with a few trading companies in between.

Gujarat dehydrated onion exporters therefore range from large plants with several lines to small units and middlemen. Why Mahuva is the centre of dehydrated onion production gives the background. This post helps you choose among them.

How the cluster is organised

Onion dehydration needs a steady supply of fresh onions, water and heat for drying. Because the plants sit close together, a visit to Mahuva can cover several of them in two or three days. It also means the whole cluster shares the same seasonal pressures.

The cluster grew up around the local onion crop and the dehydration plants. Fresh onions are bought from nearby farms and markets, washed, peeled, sliced and dried on belt or tray dryers, then milled and sieved into the final form. Garlic follows a similar path, often in the same group of plants.

Some companies manufacture and export under their own names. Others manufacture for exporters elsewhere in India, who then ship under their own labels. So the name on the offer you receive may not be the name of the plant that made your product.

Questions to put to every plant

Ask for answers in writing and compare them. Evasive answers tell you as much as detailed ones. These are the questions to start with.

  • Do you dry and mill on your own lines, and where is the plant?
  • Which forms do you make: flakes, kibbled, chopped, minced, granules, powder?
  • How do you control microbiology: washing, drying temperature, steam sterilisation?
  • What do you do to remove foreign matter: sieving, magnets, metal detection, optical sorting?
  • Which export markets do you already ship to, and what certificates do you hold?

Choosing between plants

Compare plants on the same specification: form, mesh, colour, moisture, microbiology and packing. Two quotes for different products cannot be compared, however similar the names.

Visit or have audited the shortlisted plants. How to audit a dehydration plant in Mahuva lists what to look for: hygiene, dryers, sieving, storage and records.

Check the plant's capacity against your own volumes. A very large plant may treat a small buyer as a low priority, and a small plant may not manage several containers in a season. Match your annual volume to a plant that is the right size for it, and ask for the names of the product forms it makes every month.

Seasonality matters. Plants dry most heavily around the onion harvest, so a plant visited in the off season may look different when fully running. Ask when production peaks.

What we do not publish, and why

We do not name suppliers or quote prices here. Prices depend on form, mesh, quantity and the fresh onion crop, and supplier names belong in a conversation about your specification. Compliance rules also differ by market, so confirm the limits for your destination with your customs broker.
