What is the difference between Indian and Spanish floor tiles?

Spanish tiles lead on design, brand and some technical niches; Indian tiles lead on range, cost position and volume. Good factories in both meet the same standards.

Indian and Spanish floor tiles are made to the same international standards, ISO 13006 and EN 14411. The difference is not that one is real porcelain and the other is not. It lies in design leadership, brand, cost position, lead time and the consistency of individual factories.

Spain is one of Europe's oldest tile industries and is known for design and technical innovation. India, led by Morbi, is one of the world's largest producers, known for range, volume and a strong cost position. For a broader comparison that also covers China and Vietnam, see Morbi tiles vs China, Spain and Vietnam.

Quality and standards

A good Morbi plant makes vitrified tiles with water absorption of 0.5% or less, the same group BIa as Spanish porcelain. Breaking strength, abrasion and chemical resistance can match when both are made well.

Variation is the real difference. Spanish production is concentrated in fewer, mostly larger plants with established export brands. Morbi has hundreds of plants, and quality varies widely between them. The best match European quality. The weakest do not.

For a buyer, that means the factory matters more than the country. Ask for test reports to ISO 10545 from an accredited laboratory, whichever country you buy from.

Design and finish

  • Spanish factories often lead on new surfaces, glazes and textures, and launch them at major trade fairs.
  • Morbi factories follow trends quickly using digital printing, and offer a very wide range of looks.
  • Spanish brands tend to offer complete collections with matching decor pieces and trims.
  • Morbi factories can make custom designs and private label boxes with fewer barriers for importers.

Cost, lead time and duties

Indian tiles usually cost less at the factory gate, because of lower labour and land costs, large local supply chains and heavy competition. The reasons are covered in why Morbi tiles cost less than European tiles.

Lead time and freight depend on where you are. A buyer inside the EU gets Spanish tiles by road or short sea. A buyer in the Gulf, Africa or the Americas may find Morbi closer or similar in transit time.

Duties also differ by market. As of October 2026, the EU applies anti-dumping duties to ceramic tiles from India, while tiles made in Spain move freely inside the EU. In other markets, the comparison depends on local tariffs and trade remedies. Check with a customs broker before you price.

Which to choose

  • Choose Spanish tiles when a project specification names European brands, or when you need a specific technical surface.
  • Choose Indian tiles when range, volume and cost position matter most, and you can control factory quality.
  • Some importers carry both: Spanish ranges for premium projects and Indian ranges for volume.
