Why do Morbi tiles cost less than European tiles?

Morbi's lower cost comes from scale, a complete local supply chain, intense competition and lower labour costs, not from a lower standard of tile.

Morbi tiles usually cost less than European tiles because of scale, clustering, competition and lower labour costs. A good Morbi porcelain tile is tested to the same ISO methods as a European one, so the lower cost is not, by itself, a sign of lower quality.

Lower cost can still hide lower quality at a weak factory. The task is to know which costs are structural and which come from cutting corners.

Scale in one place

Morbi is one of the largest ceramic clusters in the world. A Gujarat government release in January 2026 put the district at about 1,200 ceramic units, producing about 6 million tonnes a year. A September 2026 trade report counted around 800 units. The counts differ because some include every ceramic unit and others count only tile plants. Either way, the scale is large. Our article on why Morbi is a world tile hub gives the background.

Scale spreads fixed costs over large volumes. Kilns run long hours, presses run long series, and digital printers change designs without new tooling.

A complete supply chain nearby

Clay and feldspar come from the region. Glaze and frit makers, machinery service engineers, printing know-how, packaging and transport firms all work in the same cluster. A factory can get a spare part, a glaze or a pallet of cartons in hours. The ports of Mundra and Deendayal (Kandla) are a few hours away by road. Less money is spent moving inputs and goods around.

Competition and labour

Hundreds of plants compete for the same buyers. That keeps margins thin and pushes factories to cut costs and improve output. Labour costs in India are also lower than in Western Europe. Tile making is now highly mechanised, but sorting, packing, maintenance and loading still need many people. The government release puts employment in the Morbi ceramic cluster at about 900,000 people.

Where Europe still has an edge

  • European producers often lead on new design, special finishes and technical products for demanding projects.
  • European buyers get shorter transit, simple intra-EU trade and no anti-dumping duty on tiles made inside the EU.
  • Indian tiles entering the EU carry a definitive anti-dumping duty of 6.7% to 8.7%, as of October 2026, on top of normal customs duty, which narrows the gap.
  • Morbi kilns depend on gas and propane, so a fuel spike can reduce the gap quickly.

Compare landed cost, not factory cost

The ex-factory gap is only part of the picture. Sea freight, insurance, duties, inland transport and breakage all sit between the factory gate and your warehouse. Transit from India also ties up your money for longer than a delivery from a European plant. Inspection and testing add a cost too, but they protect you from a far larger loss.

Work out the cost per usable square metre in your warehouse, after every one of those items. That is the only figure that tells you whether Morbi is the better buy for your market and your range.

When a low quote is a warning

Some low quotes are not about structure at all. A factory may quote Premium and load Commercial grade. It may mix batches and shades, or use thinner tiles than the sample. It may also be a trader quoting from another factory's catalogue. Our guides to tile grades and comparing quotes from Morbi factories explain what to check.
