The usual route is to shortlist designs from photos or a catalogue, then ask the maker to send physical samples of those designs by international courier. For new designs, the maker first makes the die or mould and one or a few pieces, which are sent to you for approval before bulk production.
Photos are good for choosing styles but not for judging quality. Plating colour, weight, stone sparkle and how a clasp feels can only be checked in hand.
Three kinds of sample
- Stock samples: pieces from the maker's current range, picked from stock. Fastest, often within a week plus courier time.
- Development samples: a new design or a change to an existing one. Needs tooling, so it takes longer and usually costs more.
- Pre-production or approval samples: pieces from the bulk batch, checked against the approved sample before the full order is plated and packed.
How to ask for samples
- Send a clear list: design code or photo, finish colour, stone colour, size and quantity per design.
- State your base metal and plating expectations, so the sample is made to the same standard you will order.
- Ask for the weight of each piece and the plating specification in writing with the sample.
- Ask for samples in duplicate. Keep one sealed as your reference and use the other for wear and fit checks.
- If you plan to sell in the EU or US, ask whether the sample pieces can also be used for lab testing, or order extra pieces for the lab.
Shipping and customs for samples
Samples usually travel by international courier. Ask the maker to send a proper invoice showing the true value, and check whether your country charges duty or handling fees on small parcels. Low-value parcels are treated differently from country to country, and the rules have changed in some markets recently.
Pack samples in individual bags with the design code on each, so you can match what you approve to what you order.
What this means for a buyer
A good sample round saves money later. Treat the approved sample as the contract standard, and make sure the maker keeps an identical sealed piece as well.
Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We collect samples from several workshops, check plating and finish, have pieces tested at NABL-accredited labs when needed and send them to you in one parcel. Start with a free sourcing review.
