Which Gujarat ports handle heavy machinery: Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav?

Mundra, Deendayal (Kandla) and Pipavav all ship machinery in containers and as project cargo. The right one depends on your sailing, the cargo size and the factory's location.

Mundra, Deendayal (Kandla) and Pipavav all handle machinery, both in containers and as larger project cargo. For most container shipments the choice is decided by sailings to your destination. For oversize pieces it depends on berth, crane and storage arrangements at the time of shipment.

All three sit within a day's road journey of the main engineering towns, including Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Jamnagar. That is one reason Gujarat suits machinery exports.

The three ports in brief

  • Mundra, in Kutch, is a privately operated port with large container terminals and frequent mainline services to Europe, the Gulf, Africa and the Americas.
  • Deendayal Port, still widely called Kandla, is a government-owned major port near Gandhidham, renamed in 2017, which handles containers alongside large bulk, liquid and general cargo volumes.
  • Pipavav, on the Saurashtra coast near Rajula, is a privately operated port with container and general cargo berths and is often convenient for factories in southern Saurashtra.

How to choose

For containerised machinery, start with the sailing schedule. A port with a direct service to your destination often saves more time than a shorter truck journey. Your forwarder will compare transit times, transhipment points and container availability, including flat racks and open-tops if you need them.

For break-bulk and heavy pieces, the questions change. Ask which berth will take the piece, what crane capacity is available on that berth, and where the cargo can wait before loading. Port rules for heavy units, approvals and crane equipment change, so get them confirmed by the port's agent for your specific lift. Our guide to break-bulk shipping explains what the forwarder will need from you.

Inland transport matters too. An oversize load may need a route that avoids low bridges or narrow town roads. The best port on paper may be the harder one to reach with a wide trailer.

Some factories prefer to stuff containers at their own works and send them to the port by road. Others deliver crates to a container freight station near the port for stuffing. Factory stuffing lets you supervise packing and lashing directly, which is usually the better choice for machinery.

Things that change

Port capacity, new berths and service rotations change every year. Treat any comparison as a snapshot, and check current schedules with your forwarder or the shipping line before you commit to a delivery date.

Port choice also affects documents. The port of loading appears on the shipping bill and the bill of lading. Our guide on documents to export machinery from India covers the full pack.
