Can Indian jewellery makers supply custom boxes and pouches?

Most Rajkot jewellery makers do not print packaging themselves, but they can source custom boxes and pouches through local packaging suppliers or pack into yours.

Yes, custom jewellery boxes and pouches can be made in India, but usually not by the jewellery workshop itself. Most Rajkot makers buy packaging from specialist box makers and printers and can arrange it for you, or they can pack into packaging you supply. The jewellery maker coordinates; a packaging supplier makes it.

Knowing this helps you ask the right questions. The jewellery quote and the packaging quote are separate, with separate minimums and lead times.

What can be made

  • Rigid boxes with a lid or a drawer, covered in printed paper, textured paper or leatherette.
  • Folding cardboard boxes and kraft boxes, which are lighter and cheaper to ship.
  • Velvet, suede-finish or cotton pouches with a drawstring and a printed or embroidered logo.
  • Inserts in foam, card or velvet to hold earrings, rings and necklaces in place.
  • Branded cards, sleeves and tissue paper.

Minimums and lead times

Printed packaging usually needs a larger order than the jewellery, because printing plates and cutting dies are set up for each design. Plain stock boxes with a printed sticker or a hot-foil stamp have much lower minimums. Allow time for a packaging sample and approval before the bulk run, and make sure the boxes arrive at the workshop before packing starts, or the whole order waits.

Plan this alongside production. See how long an imitation jewellery order takes.

What to specify

  • Outer size and inner insert layout for each product type.
  • Material, colour and finish, with a reference sample or Pantone code.
  • Logo position, size and printing method such as foil, embossing or screen print.
  • Quantity per design and the number of spare boxes for damage.
  • How boxes are packed into cartons, so they arrive undamaged.

Ship weight and cost

Rigid boxes are bulky and light, so they can raise air freight costs because freight is charged on volume as well as weight. If you ship by air, consider flat-packed boxes or pouches and assemble at destination.

Keep a few spare boxes in every carton. Some will be crushed or marked in transit, and replacing a printed box later means a new print run with a new minimum. Ask the packaging supplier for a small overrun, and agree in advance whether you pay for it.

If you supply your own packaging from abroad, send it to the workshop early and include a few extra units. Imported packaging needs its own customs clearance in India, which takes time, and a shortfall at packing is hard to make up from a local supplier at short notice.
