For small jewellery orders, express courier is usually the simpler choice: the carrier collects in Rajkot, clears customs at both ends and delivers to your door. Once an order grows past a few dozen kilograms, air cargo through a freight forwarder often becomes cheaper per kilogram, but you then need a customs broker at destination and more paperwork.
The break-even point differs by route and by the rates you can get, so compare quotes for your real shipment size.
How they differ
- Courier: one company handles collection, export clearance, flight, import clearance and delivery. You get one bill and full tracking.
- Air cargo: the forwarder books space on an airline. Goods go airport to airport, and a customs broker clears them at destination before local delivery.
- Courier rates are per parcel and higher per kilogram. Air cargo rates fall as weight rises, but there are fixed minimum charges at both ends.
- Courier is usually faster door to door for small parcels. Air cargo can be similar on direct routes but adds handling time.
Paperwork
Both need a commercial invoice and packing list. For courier exports, the courier files the declaration under India's courier rules, which have a value ceiling per consignment. Above it, the shipment must move as regular cargo with a full shipping bill filed through a customs broker. Ask your carrier about the current limit before you book a large courier shipment.
At destination, courier import clearance is often quick for low-value goods, while air cargo needs your broker to file a full import entry. In the US, low-value shipments no longer enter duty-free, so expect duties on courier parcels too.
A simple rule of thumb
- Samples and test orders: courier.
- Repeat orders of a few cartons: courier, unless air cargo quotes much lower.
- Larger seasonal orders or several makers consolidated: air cargo through a forwarder.
- Very large planned orders with time to spare: consider sea.
Duties and taxes follow the goods, not the mode. Whether you ship by courier or cargo, the same tariff code and value apply. The difference is in who clears the goods, how fast and at what handling fee, so include the clearance charges in your comparison.
For your first few orders, keep a short record of the cost per kilogram and the transit time for each shipment. After a few months you will see where courier stops being worth it on your route, and you can switch modes with real numbers rather than guesses.
