Construction chemicals from India: makers and contractor needs

India exports concrete admixtures, waterproofing compounds, grouts and tile adhesives. Here is what contractors should specify, and which performance claims to test.

Construction chemicals from India cover concrete admixtures such as superplasticisers, waterproofing and curing compounds, tile adhesives, grouts, repair mortars and sealants. A construction chemical manufacturer in India will make several of these in one plant, so what a contractor needs to confirm is not whether the product exists but whether it performs to the standard the project requires.

Performance claims are the risk. A data sheet can say anything, so the claim has to be tested.

What do Indian makers export?

The most-exported items are concrete admixtures, waterproofing systems, tile fixing products and repair materials. What construction chemicals are made in India lists the range. Some are liquid products shipped in drums or IBCs, and some are dry powders in bags. Packing, shelf life and temperature during transit differ by type, so ask each maker about its own product.

Which claims should you test?

Match each product to the test your project specification names.

  • Concrete admixtures: water reduction, slump retention and setting time, tested in your own mix against the standard your engineer cites, such as EN 934 or ASTM C494.
  • Waterproofing: pressure resistance, adhesion and elongation for membranes, tested to the method in the project specification.
  • Tile adhesives and grouts: bond strength, open time and water absorption, using the standard your market applies.
  • Repair mortars: compressive and bond strength at the ages the specification requires.

How do you run a trial?

Treat the first order as a trial. Send the maker your mix design or substrate details, ask for a production sample, and test it on site conditions, since temperature and cement type change results. How to test a specialty chemical's performance and what a trial batch is give the routine. Keep a retained sample from each lot.

What should contractors check on the supplier?

Ask for the technical data sheet, safety data sheet, test reports from an independent laboratory and any product approvals your market requires. Check how long the product keeps and what happens at your destination climate, because many liquid admixtures separate or freeze. Confirm that the plant has made the same product for other export customers.

Some countries require construction products to carry a mark or approval, such as the CE mark in the EU. Confirm the requirement with your regulator or with the project consultant before importing.

What should the contract and the delivery cover?

Write the product name, the grade, the standard it must meet and the test report you will accept into the order. Agree shelf life at delivery, so that you do not receive material already close to expiry. For liquid admixtures, ask how the packaging copes with heat and with freezing, and for powders ask how it is protected against damp. Plan for retained samples from each lot. If a batch performs badly on site, you will need that sample and the batch number to make a claim.
