What construction chemicals are made in India?

India makes concrete admixtures, waterproofing compounds, grouts, tile adhesives, curing compounds and repair mortars. Quality varies, so performance testing to your standard matters.

India makes the full range of construction chemicals. These include concrete admixtures, waterproofing compounds, grouts, tile adhesives, curing compounds, sealants and repair mortars.

The domestic building market is large, so many plants have capacity and application know-how. Gujarat has both raw material makers, such as polycarboxylate ether producers, and formulators that turn them into finished products.

Admixtures

Admixtures are added to concrete in small doses to change how it behaves. The main groups are water reducers and superplasticisers, retarders, accelerators and air-entraining agents.

Superplasticisers are usually based on polycarboxylate ether (PCE) or sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF). PCE gives higher water reduction and is used in ready-mix and precast work. Many Indian plants sell PCE as a liquid or powder that you formulate yourself, as well as finished admixtures.

Waterproofing, grouts and adhesives

  • Integral waterproofing additives go into the concrete or mortar mix.
  • Surface waterproofing includes cementitious coatings, acrylic and polyurethane membranes and bituminous products.
  • Grouts include cement-based non-shrink grouts, epoxy grouts and tile joint fillers.
  • Tile adhesives are dry-mix powders based on cement, sand and polymer additives.
  • Repair mortars and curing compounds protect and restore concrete surfaces.

Standards and testing

Construction chemicals are tested against national standards in the buyer's market. In Europe, admixtures fall under EN 934-2 and tile adhesives under EN 12004, and both need CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation. In the US, admixtures are tested to ASTM C494. Other markets use their own codes.

The legal duty for marking and declarations usually sits with the manufacturer or the importer who places the product on the market. Confirm what applies to you with a notified body or your regulator before the first order.

Ask for test reports from an accredited laboratory, not only in-house data. Then repeat the key tests on your own cement and aggregates, because admixtures behave differently with different cements. Our guide on reading a lab certificate helps here.

Shipping and shelf life

Liquid admixtures ship in drums, IBCs or flexitanks. Powders such as tile adhesive and grout ship in multi-wall paper bags on pallets. Dry mixes pick up moisture in humid containers, so ask for bags with a plastic liner and use desiccants for long voyages.

Cement-based products have a limited shelf life, often six to twelve months in sealed bags. Check the date of manufacture at loading and plan stock turnover around it.

Most construction chemicals are not dangerous goods. Some solvent-based sealants, epoxy hardeners and curing compounds are. The safety data sheet tells you, and your forwarder confirms it before booking.

Also agree labels and data sheets in your market's language. Site contractors read the bag, not the purchase order, so mixing instructions must be clear and correct.
