Bearings from India: what to check before you order

Indian bearings range from reputable ranges to poor copies. Check tolerance class, clearance, marking and packaging, and verify who really makes the bearing.

If you want bearings from India, check the specification and the maker more closely than for most parts. A bearing manufacturer in India may make the whole bearing, only the rings, or only assemble bought-in parts, and the three give different results.

Rajkot has a bearing industry, and other Indian states are home to larger makers. The same checks apply to valve and fastener manufacturers in India, which are covered at the end.

What should the specification say?

A bearing is fully described by a handful of properties. Bearing standards and tolerance classes explains them, and the main ones are:

  • The bearing number, with dimensions to the ISO series, and the seal or shield type.
  • The tolerance class, such as normal or a tighter class for spindles and electric motors.
  • The internal clearance, such as normal or C3, which affects heat and noise in service.
  • The cage material, the grease and the steel grade, such as chrome steel.
  • The packing and marking you need, including whether the bearing may carry your own brand.

How do you tell a genuine maker?

Look for a plant with heat treatment, grinding and assembly under one roof, and ask to see the process. Bearings made in Rajkot shows what the local industry covers. Compare the quote with a trader's using how to tell a trader from a manufacturer.

Never accept a bearing marked with another company's brand unless you can show a written licence. Counterfeit marking is a legal and safety risk for the importer.

How do you test a sample?

Measure bore, outside diameter, width and runout on a sample, check hardness of the rings, and spin them for noise and roughness. A bearing test lab or a competent inspector can do this. Ask for the batch number to be on the packing so that a failure can be traced.

Do this before releasing volume, then repeat on each lot. Why quality drops after the first container shows why.

What about valves and fasteners?

For a valve manufacturer in India, start with valves made in Gujarat and name the standard and test. For a fastener manufacturer in India, start with fasteners: bolts, nuts, studs and anchors and name the grade and coating.

In all three cases a clear specification and batch certificates matter more than a name. Cost depends on tolerance class, steel, volume and packing, so a quote needs your specification.

What about packing and storage?

Bearings are damaged by moisture, dust and rough handling. Each bearing should be oiled or greased, wrapped in protective paper, and boxed individually, with the cartons strong enough for sea freight.

Check the box printing and the bearing marking against the order, and ask for batch numbers on both. Poor or inconsistent packing is one of the first signs of a weak maker, and it often goes with weak control of the bearing itself.

Store bearings flat in a dry place and do not open the box until needed. If a lot arrives with rust marks, photograph it before you move it, because the evidence supports a claim.
