Johannesburg is the commercial heart of South Africa, but it is around 500 km from the sea. Dehydrated onion and garlic from India normally land at Durban, clear there, and then travel to Gauteng by rail or truck. For a Johannesburg buyer the hard part is often the time between ship arrival and goods on the warehouse floor. The national rules are in our guide to importing dehydrated onion and garlic into South Africa.
From Durban to City Deep
City Deep, in the south of Johannesburg, is Transnet's large inland container terminal, linked by rail to the port of Durban. Many containers bound for Gauteng travel up this corridor, and many others go by road on the N3. Port Health inspection and customs clearance happen at the port of entry, so documents need to be complete before the ship arrives, or the container sits in Durban while a Johannesburg factory waits.
Ask your forwarder whether the quote runs to City Deep or to your door, and whether rail or road is planned. Both have had delays at times, so build some buffer into your stock plan. A realistic plan counts the sea voyage, a few days at least for clearance in Durban, and the inland leg, rather than the ship arrival date alone.
Who uses onion and garlic in Gauteng
Gauteng has the country's largest concentration of food manufacturers and distributors. Typical users are meat processors making sausages, burgers and polony, snack makers seasoning chips and extruded snacks, soup and sauce producers, and spice blenders supplying retail and food service. Powder and granules are the main forms for seasoning and meat, while minced onion suits soups and gravies.
Johannesburg also has long-established Indian and Muslim trading communities, for example around Fordsburg, and halal products are widely sold. If you supply that market, ask for a halal certificate from the plant. See what halal certificates buyers need.
Storage on the Highveld
Johannesburg sits high on the Highveld, at around 1,700 metres. Winters are dry, but summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and humid spells. Dry air in winter is kind to powder, but summer storage needs sealed liners and a warehouse that keeps rain and damp away from pallets. See how to stop onion powder caking. Check each pallet for wet cartons when the container is opened at your door, because damage on the long inland leg is easier to claim if it is recorded on the day.
Planning orders
Because the route is long, many Gauteng buyers order full containers of mixed forms rather than several small lots. Read mixing onion and garlic forms in one container and how much dehydrated onion fits in a 20 ft container.
