Cape Town has its own container port, so a Western Cape buyer can bring dehydrated onion and garlic from India straight in rather than trucking them from Durban. The choice depends on which shipping lines call directly, how reliable the terminal is in the windy season, and where your factory or warehouse sits. The national rules are in our guide to importing dehydrated onion and garlic into South Africa.
Port choice: Cape Town or Durban
The Cape Town Container Terminal handles cargo for the city and the wider Western Cape. Not every service from India calls there directly, so some containers are transhipped or land in Durban and travel about 1,600 km by road. Compare the total time and cost to your door, not just the sea leg.
Strong south-easterly winds in summer have at times stopped crane operations at the Cape Town terminal, causing ship delays. If you rely on a single container for a production run, keep some safety stock. Ask your forwarder how many days of wind delay their recent Cape Town sailings have seen, and plan the order date around that.
Inspection at the port
Port Health officers from the Department of Health inspect imported food at Cape Town, as at other designated ports, and the Western Cape Government lists port health services for Cape Town, Mossel Bay and Saldanha Bay. Samples can be sent to the department's forensic chemical laboratory in Cape Town. SARS handles customs. Labels must meet Regulation R146 unless and until its replacement takes effect, and lab reports should carry the lot number on the bags. See why NABL lab reports are accepted abroad.
Who buys in the Western Cape
The Western Cape has a large food and beverage industry, from meat processors and bakeries to sauce makers and ready-meal producers. Cape Malay cooking, with dishes such as bobotie and curries, gives the city its own tradition of spice blends, and Cape Town has a large Muslim community, so halal certification often matters. The Muslim Judicial Council's halaal trust is one of the local certifiers buyers may deal with. See what halal certificates buyers need.
Powder and granules suit blends and meat seasoning. Minced onion suits soups, sauces and toppings. Some Western Cape manufacturers also export finished food to Europe, which makes EU-style testing for ethylene oxide and residues a sensible baseline. See tests to order for spices going to the EU.
Winter damp
Unlike the rest of the country, Cape Town gets most of its rain in winter, from about May to August, and the air near the coast can be damp. That is the season to watch warehouse humidity and keep powder in sealed liners. See how dehydrated onion is packed.

How we help
We find and audit plants in Gujarat, have each lot tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory, supervise loading and check the documents before shipping, for one written fee agreed in advance. You buy directly from the plant. To plan a Cape Town order, book a free sourcing review.
