Dammam is where most Indian dehydrated onion and garlic for eastern and central Saudi Arabia first touches land. Its port, King Abdulaziz Port, is the largest on the kingdom's Gulf coast, and SFDA inspection and FASAH clearance usually happen here even when the buyer is in Riyadh.
King Abdulaziz Port
Ships from Mundra, Pipavav and Nhava Sheva reach Dammam through the Strait of Hormuz, a short run compared with routes to Europe, though some services tranship in Jebel Ali. Transit varies with routing, so ask your forwarder for current schedules. At the port, SFDA inspectors check that the importer and product are registered, review labels and lab reports, and may sample. Containers bound for the capital can continue by Saudi Arabia Railways to the Riyadh Dry Port.
Who uses it in the Eastern Province
Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran form one metropolitan area, with industrial cities that include food factories, spice packers and distributors serving the Eastern Province and nearby Gulf states. Large catering contractors supply the oil and gas sector's work camps and canteens, and they buy minced, chopped and granulated onion and garlic in volume. Seasoning and sauce makers prefer powder. The area also has a large South Asian workforce, which supports demand for Indian spice mixes.
Camp caterers tend to buy on long contracts with fixed specifications and regular call-offs. That suits a steady shipping rhythm, one or two containers a month from the same plant, rather than large single orders. It also means a failed lot hurts more, because the caterer has no spare stock to fall back on. Ask the plant to hold a retained sample from every lot so any complaint can be checked against what actually shipped.
Some Dammam importers also supply customers in Bahrain over the King Fahd Causeway and in other nearby Gulf states. If part of a load is going onward, check the destination's rules before shipping, because labels and certificates accepted in Saudi Arabia may need changes elsewhere.
Humidity on the Gulf coast
Summers in Dammam are extremely hot, and humidity on the coast can be very high. Powder left in a container on the quay can absorb moisture and cake. Set a low moisture limit, ask for lined bags or foil packs for powder, and move cargo to an air-conditioned warehouse promptly. See how to stop onion powder caking.
