Dehydrated onion and garlic from India for buyers in Jeddah

Jeddah buyers receive Indian onion and garlic through Jeddah Islamic Port, clear via SFDA and FASAH, and supply a catering trade shaped by Hajj and Umrah.

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's Red Sea gateway and the commercial city closest to Makkah. For a buyer of Indian dehydrated onion and garlic, that means a direct sea route from Gujarat, a port with heavy food traffic, and customers whose demand rises and falls with the pilgrimage calendar.

Arriving through Jeddah Islamic Port

Jeddah Islamic Port is the kingdom's main Red Sea port and handles a large share of its food imports. Several liner services connect it directly with Mundra and Nhava Sheva, and published schedules suggest roughly one to two weeks port to port. Port congestion can add days, so build slack into the plan for the pilgrimage season. SFDA inspectors at the port check the registration, labels and lab reports filed through FASAH, and can sample the load.

Who uses it in Jeddah

The biggest single influence is catering for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah, served largely through Jeddah suppliers. Large kitchens use minced, chopped and granulated onion and garlic because they store well and save labour. Jeddah also has spice packers, snack and seasoning makers, and food factories in its industrial cities. Many of the cooks and food businesses come from South Asia, which keeps demand for Indian flavour profiles steady.

Seasonality matters. Ask your supplier to load well ahead of Ramadan and the Hajj, when kitchens stock up and port slots tighten. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, these peaks move about eleven days earlier each year, so check the dates every season rather than copying last year's plan.

Pilgrim caterers cook at very large scale, so they value consistency: the same colour, cut size and flavour in every lot. Agree a reference sample with the plant and check each shipment against it. Our guide to Indian versus Chinese dehydrated garlic explains why some Jeddah buyers compare origins before choosing.

Heat and humidity

Jeddah is hot and humid for much of the year, more humid than inland Riyadh. That is the worst combination for onion powder. Specify a low moisture limit at loading, pack powder in lined bags inside cartons, and avoid leaving containers on the quay. Once opened, bags in a busy catering kitchen should be resealed or used quickly, and smaller pack sizes can help large kitchens avoid half-used bags absorbing moisture. What your Jeddah importer will check

  • SFDA product registration in place before the container sails.
  • Arabic labelling to GSO 9 as adopted by the SFDA.
  • Test reports for pesticides, ethylene oxide and microbiology, tied to the lot.
  • A halal certificate if claimed, from a body the SFDA recognises. Pilgrim caterers usually ask for one.
