Toasted and roasted onion from India, matched to your roast
Dried onion roasted to gold or light brown, mostly as minced, chopped, granules and powder. We fix the roast with a sealed sample and test every lot before loading.
Toasted or roasted onion is plain dehydrated onion heated again in a roaster until it turns golden and develops a sweet, cooked flavour, with no oil added. Buyers use it in snack seasonings, soup bases, gravies, rubs and toppings that need a cooked onion note. The main risks are an uneven or burnt roast and the belief that roasting makes the product safe, which it does not unless the plant can prove it. We work for you, not the factory: we find plants that run their own roaster, seal the roast level you approve and test every lot.

Uses
Where buyers use it
Snack seasonings
Roasted onion powder and granules give a cooked, savoury note to crisps, popcorn and extruded snacks without frying anything.
Soups, gravies and stock bases
Roasted granules and powder add colour and a browned onion flavour to dry soup mixes, gravies and bouillon.
Rubs and marinades
Coarse roasted granules suit meat rubs and barbecue blends where a toasted flavour is wanted.
Toppings
Roasted minced and chopped onion work as dry toppings on breads, salads and meals, and keep the longer shelf life of a dry product.

Shipping
HS code, packing and loads
HS code
Plain dried onion sits under 0712.20, but toasting can count as further preparation. US Customs rulings have placed toasted onion under 2005.99, and practice varies by country. Ask your broker to confirm before you order.
Packing
Cartons with sealed polyethylene liners, as for plain grades. Roasted onion picks up moisture and loses aroma faster once opened, so reseal part-used cartons.
Container load
Most roasted onion ships as minced, granules or powder, which load more weight than flakes. Ask for the plant's last actual loading of the same form and pack.
Shelf life and storage
With no oil added it keeps like a dry product. Suppliers commonly state 12 to 24 months sealed, cool and dry, though roasted aroma can fade sooner.
Questions
Toasted and roasted onion: common questions
Is toasted onion the same as roasted onion?
In most quotes, yes. Both usually mean dried onion heated again with dry heat and no oil. Ask the plant to state in writing whether anything is added, because some products sold as toasted carry oil, salt or flavouring.
Is toasted onion the same as fried onion?
No. Toasted onion is roasted with dry heat and keeps like a dry product. Fried onion is cooked in oil, carries oil, has a shorter shelf life and needs oil quality tests.
Does roasting kill bacteria in onion?
Not reliably. Roasting is a heat step, but it is not a validated kill step unless the plant can show it is. Keep your Salmonella and plate count limits and ask for lab results on every lot.
What HS code applies to toasted onion?
It is not settled. Plain dried onion is 0712.20, but some customs authorities, including US Customs in published rulings, have classed toasted onion under 2005.99 as further prepared. Ask your broker before ordering.
