What decides the price of ceramic frit

Frit prices depend on type, raw materials, energy, packing and order size. Here is what a frit price per ton is built from and what to put in a quote request.

A frit price per ton depends first on the type of frit, then on the raw materials in it, the energy used to melt it, the packing and the order size. There is no single figure for ceramic frit, because the word covers many compositions made for different glazes.

To get a real price you need to say which frit, in what form, how much and where it is going.

What is frit and why does type matter?

Frit is glass-like material made by melting raw materials and quenching them, then used as an ingredient in glazes. What ceramic frit is and who buys it covers the basics.

Types differ in composition and function: transparent, opaque, matt, and frits for fast firing or for specific tile bodies. The types of frit made in Morbi lists them. A specialist frit with tight composition control needs better raw materials and more process control than a general-purpose one.

Which cost drivers matter?

The main inputs to a frit quote are these:

  • Raw materials, such as silica, feldspar, borates, zinc compounds and zirconium compounds, whose own costs move over time.
  • Energy for melting, since frit furnaces run at high temperature.
  • Particle size or form: granules, ground powder or milled to a specific fineness.
  • Quality control: batch testing and consistency between lots.
  • Packing: bags, big bags or bulk, and pallets.

How do order size and packing affect the quote?

Larger orders spread set-up and testing across more material, and a factory may only run a frit type in campaigns, so there are minimums, covered in MOQ for frits and glazes. Packing changes handling cost and freight: see how frits and glazes are packed for export.

Because frit is bought by weight and shipped in bulk, the weight per container and the port also matter.

What should you send to get a frit quote?

Give the supplier a technical data sheet or target properties: composition range, melting behaviour, firing temperature, particle size and any restricted substances. Ask for a sample and a certificate of analysis for the lot you will receive, and see tests for frits and glazes.

Frit raw materials may be subject to chemical regulations in your country. Confirm with your regulator or customs broker what documents you need.

What risks come with buying frit?

The main risk is variation between lots. A change in raw material or in the melting profile can shift the melting behaviour of the glaze, and the tile line may notice only when it fires. Ask for a certificate of analysis for every lot and keep retained samples.

Test a small quantity in your own glaze or the end user's before committing to a full container. The firing behaviour depends on the whole recipe, and only a trial shows how a particular frit behaves in it.

Keep your own record of each lot: certificate number, date of receipt, and the batch it was used in. If a glaze fault appears later, that record lets you and the supplier trace it to a lot and decide quickly whether the frit was the cause.
