Can I use a sourcing agent for just one service, like inspection?

Yes. Many buyers use an agent only for a factory audit, a pre-shipment inspection or loading supervision. Agree the scope in writing and give the agent the specification.

Yes. You can use a sourcing agent for a single service, such as a factory audit, a supplier search or a pre-shipment inspection. Many buyers start that way and add services only when they see a need.

The condition is that the scope is clear. A one-off service works well when the agent knows exactly what to check and what standard to check it against.

Services buyers often use on their own

  • A supplier search, ending in a shortlist of checked manufacturers.
  • An audit of a factory you already use or are about to use.
  • Sample collection and testing at an accredited laboratory.
  • A pre-shipment inspection of the finished lot against your specification.
  • Loading supervision, with photos of the empty container, the loading and the seal.
  • A check of the export documents before they are issued.

What the agent needs from you

An inspection is only as good as the standard it checks against. For a stand-alone service, give the agent your written specification, the purchase contract or order, the approved sample or its photos, and any test reports already issued.

Tell the factory that the agent is coming and has your authority. Without that, a factory may delay access or refuse to show the lot.

The limits of a single service

One service checks one moment. An inspection can tell you the lot in front of the inspector matches the spec. It cannot tell you whether the factory swapped a raw material in week two, or whether the sample you approved was made somewhere else.

That does not make single services weak. It means you should pick the one that covers your biggest risk. If you are unsure whether a supplier is really a manufacturer, start with an audit. If the supplier is proven but quality varies, start with inspection and loading. Our guide on why quality drops after the first container shows where the usual risks sit.

How to brief a one-off job

  • State the job in one line, such as an inspection of one lot before loading.
  • Name the factory, its address and a contact who expects the visit.
  • Give the date the goods will be ready, and confirm it again a few days before.
  • Say what the agent may decide on site, and what must come back to you.
  • Agree the format of the report and when you will receive it.

Agent inspection or third-party inspection

For inspection alone, you can also hire an international inspection company. The difference is mainly in what the inspector knows about your order and how far the work goes. It is explained in agent inspection vs third-party inspection.

Can an agent audit my existing supplier?

Yes. An agent can visit your current supplier, check that it makes the goods itself, and report on capacity, quality control, documents and working conditions, with photos.
