Tile clusters beyond Morbi: Wankaner, Himmatnagar and others

Wankaner sits inside the wider Morbi ceramic belt; other Gujarat centres make smaller ranges. Here is how to treat them when Morbi is not the only option.

Wankaner tiles and Himmatnagar tiles are the two names buyers search for when they look past Morbi. Wankaner is in practice part of the wider Morbi ceramic belt, and many plants there trade and ship as Morbi suppliers. Himmatnagar is a different case, and you should check each plant individually.

Gujarat's ceramic industry is concentrated, so the honest answer is that Morbi and its neighbours account for most of what is exported. Smaller centres are worth a look for specific needs.

Where does Wankaner fit?

Wankaner lies close to Morbi along the same highway corridor, and the area between Morbi, Wankaner and Thangadh is often called the ceramic belt. Suppliers in Wankaner draw on the same raw material, glaze, machinery and port logistics as Morbi, so you should evaluate them with the same checks.

The practical consequence is that you will not find a cost or quality difference simply because of the postal address. Judge the plant, not the town. See why Morbi is a world tile hub for how the cluster works.

What about Himmatnagar and other centres?

Himmatnagar is in north Gujarat, away from the Morbi belt. We could not verify from an official source which tile types are made there today, so do not rely on a general claim. Ask any plant you find in the area for its product range, kiln details, test reports and export record.

The same applies to other smaller centres in Gujarat. Local clusters can offer a focused range or a plant with spare capacity, but they usually lack the depth of suppliers, glaze houses and technicians that Morbi has.

When is a smaller centre worth considering?

There are a few cases where looking outside the core belt makes sense:

  • You need a specific product that a small plant makes well and Morbi plants treat as a sideline.
  • You want a less crowded order book and are willing to pay for it in longer logistics.
  • You are building a second source so one cluster-wide event, such as a fuel shortage, does not stop your supply.

What are the trade-offs?

Distance from the ports adds trucking. Fewer local suppliers means longer waits for glaze, spares or repairs. And fewer neighbouring plants means less competitive pressure on quotes and less choice if one plant fails an audit.

Whatever the location, the checks are the same: confirm the plant is a manufacturer, audit capacity, and test production lots. Why source from Gujarat gives the wider picture.

How should you vet a plant in a smaller centre?

Use the same audit points as for any Morbi plant: confirm that it presses its own tiles, ask for the kiln and press list, and request test reports and export documents from the last year. Distance does not change what a good plant can show you.

If you plan to split supply across two clusters, keep the specification identical and compare production samples side by side. The aim of a second source is that either plant can fill an order to the same standard, so test that before you need it.
