Textile testing labs in Gujarat: SGS, Intertek, TÜV and BV

Which international and Indian labs test textiles near Ahmedabad and Surat, what NABL accreditation means, and how to choose one for your market.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

The main international laboratories testing textiles for Gujarat exporters are SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas, TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland and Eurofins, all of which have Indian operations serving the Ahmedabad, Surat and Mumbai area. Alongside them sit Indian laboratories accredited by NABL, the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, which is India's national lab accreditation.

Gujarat is one of India's largest textile producing states, with cotton and denim around Ahmedabad and synthetic fabrics around Surat, so polyester and viscose testing is as routine a request as cotton. Samples that cannot be tested locally are usually couriered to Mumbai, which adds a day or two but rarely more. For most pre-shipment test plans this is not a problem if the samples are drawn as soon as bulk fabric is ready.

International labs with Indian operations

  • SGS, widely used for full pre-shipment packages and recognised by most European and American retailers.
  • Intertek, strong in apparel and home textiles, with programmes many brands already nominate.
  • Bureau Veritas, often specified by French and other European retailers.
  • TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland, German groups with chemical and safety testing capability in India.
  • Eurofins, best known for chemical testing, including restricted substances work.

Nominated versus independent labs

Many brands have a nominated lab list, and if your company is one of them, the choice is already made. The supplier may have a preferred lab too, usually the cheapest or the one that knows their fabrics. Treat that as information rather than a recommendation, and keep the choice of lab and the drawing of samples in the buyer's hands.

The report is only as good as the sample. If the mill selects and sends the sample itself, the lab is testing what the mill chose to show. Sealed samples drawn from bulk by someone working for you close that gap.

Turnaround and cost vary between labs and between test packages, so ask for a quotation and a lead time at the same time as you agree the test plan. Build that lead time into the production schedule rather than hoping the report will arrive before the container does.

What NABL accreditation tells you

NABL accreditation shows that an Indian lab has been assessed against the international standard for testing laboratories for a defined scope of tests. It does not mean the lab is accepted by your brand or by your market's regulator, so check that the scope covers the specific methods you need. Some buyer programmes accept NABL reports for physical tests while asking for an international lab on chemical compliance.

Requirements differ by retailer and change over time, so confirm which lab and which methods your customer will accept before you order the work. This is general guidance and not legal advice.

How we work with labs

We agree the test plan for your destination market, draw sealed samples from the bulk ourselves and send them to the NABL-accredited or international lab you prefer. We check the report against your specification before loading, supervise the loading, and send you a weekly update while the order runs. If you are choosing a lab for a first order from Gujarat, a free 20-minute sourcing review is a good place to start.
