Gujarat exports textiles at every stage of the chain, but the largest volumes are in raw cotton, cotton yarn, denim and cotton fabric, polyester and viscose fabrics, home textiles and technical textiles. Finished garments are a smaller share than in the southern and northern garment states, because Gujarat is first a fibre, yarn and fabric state. That shapes what a buyer should expect to source here and what is better sourced elsewhere.
Fibre and yarn
Shankar-6 cotton from Saurashtra is one of India's most exported cotton varieties, shipped as pressed bales mainly to spinning mills in Asia. Cotton yarn, from coarse open-end counts up to combed ring-spun counts for fine shirting, follows close behind. Buyers of yarn are usually mills or knitters themselves, and they buy on count, strength, evenness and contamination level rather than on appearance.
Polyester filament yarn and polyester staple fibre are also exported, mostly from the large petrochemical sites in the south of the state. These are commodity products, traded on price and delivery.
Recycled cotton yarn is a smaller but growing export, bought by knitters and denim mills that need recycled content for their own customers. Quality varies widely, so it is worth testing strength and evenness before committing.
Fabric
- Denim from Ahmedabad, in weights from light shirting denim to heavy bottom weights, sold to garment makers across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
- Cotton and cotton blend shirting, poplin, twill and canvas, supplied as greige, RFD (ready for dyeing) or finished.
- Polyester georgette, chiffon, crepe, satin and jacquard from Surat, as greige, dyed or printed, for dresses, abayas, scarves and linings.
- Sarees and dress material lengths from Surat for South Asian markets and the diaspora.
- Handcrafted fabrics from Kutch, Patan and Jamnagar, such as Ajrakh block prints, bandhani and Patola, in small volumes for premium brands.
Home textiles and technical textiles
Bedsheets, pillow covers, quilts, towels, curtain and upholstery fabric are made around Ahmedabad for retailers and importers in Europe, North America and the Middle East. These are usually made to order against the buyer's design, and OEKO-TEX or GOTS certification is often requested.
Technical textiles are a growing group. Gujarat makes PP woven sacks and FIBC jumbo bags, mostly in Kutch and near the ports, along with geotextiles, filter fabrics, coated fabrics, tarpaulins and conveyor belting. They are bought on performance specifications rather than appearance, so test reports matter more than hand samples.
What this means for your order
If you buy yarn, denim, cotton fabric, home textiles, polyester fabrics or packaging textiles, Gujarat should be on your shortlist. If you buy finished knitwear or woven garments at scale, you will usually find more capacity in other states, although some Ahmedabad mills now run their own garment lines. Match the product to the cluster first, then shortlist units within it.
Volume also tells you where competition for capacity is tightest. Denim and home textile mills run full ahead of the main retail seasons, so book production slots early and expect lead times to stretch in those months.
We help buyers with that matching step and everything after it. We visit the mills, run audits, send sealed samples to an NABL-accredited lab, supervise loading and send weekly updates, and we leave you with one approved supplier plus one backup.
