What is a telex release or seaway bill?

A telex release means the original bill of lading was surrendered in India so you collect without originals. A sea waybill is a non-negotiable document with no originals at all.

A telex release means the supplier surrenders the original bill of lading to the shipping line in India, and the line tells its office at your port to release the cargo without originals. A sea waybill, often called a seaway bill, is a non-negotiable transport document: no originals are issued, and the named consignee can collect the goods.

Both avoid couriering paper originals. Both also change who controls the cargo, so they need to fit your payment term. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How a telex release works

  • The line issues an original bill of lading after loading.
  • The supplier returns, or surrenders, the originals to the line at origin.
  • The line marks the bill as surrendered and sends a release message to its destination office.
  • You or your customs broker collect the delivery order without presenting originals.

How a sea waybill works

A sea waybill is issued instead of a bill of lading. It is not a document of title. The consignee named on it can collect the goods by proving identity. It suits trusted, repeat trade where payment is already settled or on open account.

Because the shipper can sometimes change the consignee before delivery, depending on the line's terms, the buyer has less certainty than with a negotiable bill held in hand.

Why the timing of the release matters

On advance plus balance against scanned documents, the usual sequence is: the supplier ships and emails copies, you pay the balance, and the supplier then arranges the telex release. The supplier keeps control of the cargo until your money arrives.

If the supplier asks for full payment before shipment and then uses a sea waybill, you have given up both leverage points. On a first order, that is a risk to weigh carefully. See the safest payment method for a first order.

A telex release or sea waybill does not usually work with a letter of credit that calls for a full set of original bills. If you use an LC, align the documents with the credit wording. Our guide to what a bill of lading is explains the original bill.

When each one helps

  • Short voyages, such as India to the Gulf, where originals by courier might arrive after the ship.
  • Repeat orders with a supplier you trust and pay promptly.
  • Situations where courier delays would cause demurrage at your port.
  • Open account or fully prepaid trade where the bill's title function adds nothing.

Checks before you rely on one

  • Ask the line or forwarder to confirm the release has reached the destination office.
  • Check the consignee name exactly matches your company for customs.
  • Make sure any release fee is clear and agreed.
  • Keep a copy of the surrendered bill or sea waybill for your records and customs broker.

What is a letter of credit, and when should I use one?

A letter of credit is your bank's undertaking to pay the supplier when documents that comply with it are presented. Use one for larger orders, new suppliers or when either side needs bank backing.
