What is a soft-close seat cover, and is it included?

A soft-close seat cover has small dampers in its hinges, so the lid and seat lower slowly instead of dropping with a bang. It reduces noise and protects the ceramic from impact.

Whether it is included depends on the quote. Many factories quote one-piece WCs with a seat, and some quote two-piece WCs without one. Never assume: the seat type, material and hinge should be named on the quotation and the purchase order.

Seat materials

  • Urea formaldehyde (UF) seats are hard, heavy and scratch-resistant, with a glossy finish close to ceramic. They are common on mid and upper ranges.
  • Polypropylene (PP) seats are lighter, more flexible and usually lower in cost position. They are common on volume and project ranges.
  • Some seats use other plastics or wood cores; check the material on the specification sheet.

Hinge and fixing options

Besides soft-close, ask about quick-release hinges, which let the seat lift off for cleaning. Check the hinge metal or plastic, since cheap metal hinges can corrode in humid bathrooms. Fixing kits differ between top-fixing, used where the underside is hard to reach, and bottom-fixing.

Ask the seat supplier for its own cycle test results for the hinges and dampers, and for the seat's load test. Ask too whether replacement dampers can be bought on their own, or only a complete hinge set.

Fit matters as much as features

A seat must match the bowl shape and the seat hole spacing. In the US, round and elongated bowls need different seats, so a mismatch is obvious to customers. In Europe, seat fixing dimensions for pans are set out in EN 33.

Seats are usually bought in by the ceramic factory from a seat supplier. If the factory changes supplier, fit and quality can change without notice. Ask for the seat to be specified by supplier model, and check it on the WC at inspection.

What to check before shipment

  • The seat sits flat on the bowl without rocking and covers the rim evenly.
  • The soft-close action works smoothly on a sample of seats, and the lid does not slam.
  • Hinge caps and fixing kits are complete in each carton.
  • The seat is packed so it cannot scratch the glaze, usually in its own bag or box inside the WC carton.

Spares and after-sales

Soft-close dampers wear over time, and seats are the most commonly replaced part of a WC. Keep spare seats and hinges for your best-selling models. Sanitaryware spare parts covers what else to stock, and fittings, cisterns and flush valves covers the other bought-in parts.
