What is soda ash, and what are light and dense grades?

Soda ash is sodium carbonate, used in glass, detergents and chemicals. Light and dense grades have the same chemistry but different bulk density and grain size, which suits different processes.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate, a white alkaline powder used in glass, detergents, chemicals and many other industries. Light and dense soda ash are the same chemical. They differ in grain size and bulk density, which decides how they handle and where they fit best.

Light ash is fluffy and fine. Dense ash has larger, heavier grains and less dust.

Where soda ash is used

  • Glass makers use it to lower the melting temperature of silica sand in flat glass, containers and fibreglass.
  • Detergent makers use it as a builder and alkali in powders and cleaners.
  • Chemical plants use it to make sodium silicate, sodium bicarbonate and other sodium compounds.
  • Water treatment plants use it to adjust pH and soften water.
  • Metals, mining, pulp and paper, and textile processors use it as an alkali.

Light and dense grades

Light soda ash comes straight from calcining sodium bicarbonate in the ammonia-soda process. It has a low bulk density, roughly half a tonne per cubic metre. It dissolves quickly, which suits detergents, chemicals and water treatment.

Dense soda ash is made by recrystallising light ash, usually through a monohydrate step. Its bulk density is about twice that of light ash. Glass furnaces prefer it because it mixes well with sand, flows smoothly and makes less dust, which can carry over into the furnace. It also packs more tonnes into each bag and container. Detergent makers sometimes prefer dense ash too, where they dry-mix powders. The grade is a matter of process, so ask your production team which one they run on now.

What to specify

A soda ash specification usually covers these points. Ask for each on the certificate of analysis:

  • Total alkalinity or sodium carbonate content, usually at least 99%.
  • Sodium chloride, which glass and chemical users limit.
  • Iron, which affects the colour of clear glass.
  • Sulphate and water-insoluble matter.
  • Bulk density and particle size distribution, which separate light from dense.

Handling and transport

Soda ash is not classed as dangerous goods for sea transport, but it irritates eyes and skin and needs a safety data sheet. It absorbs moisture and can cake in damp storage. Most export cargo ships in 50 kg bags or one-tonne jumbo bags inside containers, with larger orders sometimes moving in bulk. Ask for bags with an inner liner if your goods will sit in a humid warehouse, and check that each bag shows the grade, lot number and net weight. Mixed or unmarked bags make it hard to trace a problem back to a batch.

Most of India's soda ash capacity is in Gujarat, near salt and limestone. Our article on how soda ash is made in Gujarat explains the process and how to approach producers.

What is caustic soda, and what forms is it sold in?

Caustic soda is sodium hydroxide, a strong alkali. It is sold as solid flakes or prills, usually about 98% pure, or as a lye solution, usually 48 to 50%. Your process decides the form.

What is the MOQ for bulk minerals and salt?

For bagged salt or bentonite, the practical minimum is usually one 20-foot container. For loose bulk, it is a vessel parcel of thousands of tonnes. The shipping method sets the MOQ.
