Shipping tiles from India to the USA means choosing a US discharge coast, accepting that most services involve a transshipment or a long routing, and planning for transit risk on heavy cargo. Most importers pick the port nearest their warehouse and then let the forwarder choose the service.
Routings and schedules change often. I have not quoted transit times here. Ask your forwarder for current options and see the general guide to sea freight times from India.
Should you ship to the East Coast or the West Coast?
Choose by where the tiles will be used and stored. Tiles are heavy and cheap to damage, so every extra inland mile adds cost and handling risk.
- East Coast and Gulf ports suit buyers in the eastern and southern states. Indian cargo usually reaches them via the Suez Canal or around the Cape, depending on what carriers are doing at the time.
- West Coast ports suit buyers in the western states. Services may route via Asian hubs, with a transshipment.
- Inland buyers should compare the cost and handling of rail or truck from each coast, not just the ocean leg.
What does transshipment mean for tiles?
A transshipment means the container is moved from one vessel to another at an intermediate port. Each move adds handling, a possible delay and a small risk of damage or a missed connection.
For tiles, ask whether a direct or fewer-handling service exists, and check that your cargo insurance covers the whole route. See insurance for tile shipments.
What drives transit risk?
The main sources of delay and loss on the US lane are these:
- Port congestion at the discharge port, which can leave a container waiting before it is released.
- Schedule changes by carriers when routes are diverted.
- Poor loading at origin, which shows up as breakage on arrival after a long voyage.
- Mismatched documents that hold the container at customs.
The best protection is good packing and supervised loading. See preventing tile breakage in containers.
What about standards and duties?
US buyers often ask for tiles tested to ANSI A137.1. See the ANSI A137.1 standard for tiles. Import duties and any trade remedies depend on the tariff code and exporter, so confirm them with a licensed customs broker. The wider route is in importing Indian tiles into the USA.
What should you ask your forwarder?
Ask for the routing, the number of transshipments, the free days at the discharge port and the cut-off dates for each option. Also ask how the forwarder handles a missed connection and who pays for the delay. Compare options on the whole journey to your warehouse, not on the ocean leg alone, and put the answers in writing before you book.
