Shipping fabric from India to the US, including from Surat

Fabric from Surat usually moves by road to Hazira, Mundra or Nhava Sheva and then by sea to the US. Here are the route choices, container options and documents.

Shipping fabric from India to the US normally means a truck to a Gujarat or Maharashtra port, a container on an ocean service, and a US port or inland rail connection. Fabric from Surat usually leaves through Hazira, Mundra or Nhava Sheva, depending on the carrier service and the date you need.

Air freight is possible for small, urgent lots but is rarely used for bulk fabric. The choices that matter are the port pair, the container type, how the rolls are packed and who handles US customs entry.

Which port should Surat fabric leave from?

Surat has road links to Hazira, to Mundra and to Nhava Sheva near Mumbai. The best port is the one with the service your forwarder can book to your US destination, with acceptable transhipment and cut-off times.

Choosing a port for textile exports from Ahmedabad or Surat compares them. The cheapest-looking inland haulage is not always the cheapest total route, so ask your forwarder to quote the whole path to your door.

How long does the voyage take?

Transit time depends on the service, any transhipment and whether you ship to the US West Coast or East Coast. Schedules also change with congestion and routing decisions. We do not quote fixed days here; sea freight times for Indian textiles to Europe and the US explains the ranges and what to ask a forwarder.

Add the time for production, inspection, trucking, port cut-off, US customs clearance and delivery. The ocean leg is only part of it.

What container and packing suit fabric?

Fabric is normally shipped in 20 ft or 40 ft containers. Rolls should be wrapped in polythene to keep out moisture, and loaded so that they cannot crush each other or shift. See how woven fabric is packed for export for roll, fold and bale options.

Moisture is the main risk on a long sea voyage. Ask for dry, clean containers and desiccants where the route is humid, as covered in preventing mould and moisture damage.

What does the US importer need to arrange?

The US importer of record is responsible for entry, duty and any bond. For most buyers that means appointing a licensed customs broker and filing the importer security filing before the vessel loads, where required.

Your broker will ask for the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and any origin papers. Our guide to the document pack your broker will ask for lists them. Duty on fabric depends on its code and on measures in force at entry, so confirm both before you order.

Which dates should you build into the plan?

Work backwards from the date you need the fabric in your warehouse. Subtract delivery from the US port, customs clearance, the ocean leg, the port cut-off at origin, trucking from the mill and a margin for delay.

Fabric also needs inspection before loading, and a failed roll can take days to replace. Put the inspection date ahead of the booking cut-off, and tell your forwarder early if the cargo is date-sensitive so that a later sailing can be arranged without losing the booking.
