Pre-shipment inspection of spices is an independent check of the goods before they leave the supplier, usually at the plant and at the container. It confirms that the quantity, packing, marking and quality match your order, and that the container is sealed and recorded. Container loading supervision in India is the part of that check carried out while the cargo is going into the box.
Payment, claims and insurance all depend on what was in the container on the day it was sealed.
What a spice quality inspector in India checks
A spice quality inspector in India, whether from an inspection company or your agent, should work from your specification, not from the supplier's. Typical checks are:
- Lot identity: product, grade, batch codes and bag markings against the order and the certificate.
- Visual quality: colour, cleanliness, foreign matter and signs of mould, insects or adulteration.
- Moisture and other quick tests, where the inspector has the equipment.
- Packing: bag type, weight per bag, stitching, labelling and the condition of cartons.
- Sampling: drawing sealed samples at random for a laboratory, and keeping a counter sample.
What happens at loading
At loading the inspector checks that the container is clean, dry, free of odour and undamaged, then counts the bags as they go in. Photos are taken of the empty container, the loading in progress, the full load, the door seal and the seal number. Those photos and the seal number go into the report. See what an inspector checks at loading and photos taken during container loading.
Condensation and damp are a major risk on the sea journey, so check that liners and desiccants are used where needed, as covered in preventing container rain and condensation.
Third-party inspection in Gujarat
Third-party inspection in Gujarat is available at Mundra, Kandla and Pipavav, and in the production clusters. You can hire an inspection company directly, or have your agent arrange it. An agent arranging third-party inspection explains who is accountable for what. Whoever you choose, the inspector must report to you and not to the supplier. Ask to see a sample report before you book.
Agree in advance what happens if the inspector finds a problem. The usual options are rework at the supplier, replacement of the failed bags, or a hold on the shipment until you decide, and the supplier should accept them in writing before loading day, not on it.
Quality control agent in India: what to ask for
If you use a quality control agent in India, agree the scope in writing: the number of visits, whether visits are announced, what is sampled and the report format. Inspection does not replace a laboratory test. The two work together, with the inspector confirming the lot and the laboratory confirming the contents. Cost depends on location, number of visits and report depth, so we do not give figures.
