Polyester fabric from Surat: suppliers and what to specify

Surat is the centre of India's polyester fabric trade. Learn how to approach its suppliers and the fields a quote request needs so offers can be compared.

Polyester fabric from India mostly comes from Surat, and the way to buy it well is to send a precise specification to suppliers who already make that fabric. A vague enquiry brings back a long list of quotes for different goods.

Surat has weaving units, texturising and twisting units, and process houses for dyeing and printing, all within one city. The mix gives wide choice, but it also makes it hard to know who really makes what. Why Surat is India's centre for synthetic fabric explains the structure.

Who are the polyester fabric suppliers in Surat?

A Surat polyester fabric supplier can be a weaver, a process house, a trader at the market, or an agent who sells all three. Weavers make the grey cloth. Process houses dye, print and finish it. Traders buy and resell.

For a repeat programme you want a supplier that either controls both weaving and processing, or works with a stable process house. For a one-off buy of market goods, a trader is fine, as long as you accept the limits. See Surat market goods versus mill-direct fabric.

What must a polyester fabric enquiry contain?

These are the fields suppliers need for a quote you can compare.

  • Fabric name and construction, such as georgette, crepe, satin or poplin, and the weave.
  • Yarn type and denier for warp and weft, and whether the yarn is filament or spun. Denier and filament counts explained helps here.
  • Width and weight in GSM, with the tolerance you accept.
  • Colour method: dyed, printed, or digital print, and the shade reference.
  • Finish, such as peach, softener or water repellent, and any end-use requirement.
  • Quantity, delivery window, packing and port.

How do you compare suppliers fairly?

Ask each supplier to send a swatch of the quality they will actually ship, with a handloom label and the construction written on it. Test the weight and thread count of that swatch yourself. Two fabrics sold under one name can differ noticeably in weight.

Look at the range in synthetic fabrics made in Surat to learn the names, and use the specification checklist for printed polyester if your fabric is printed.

What are the common risks?

The main risks are shade variation between lots, weight shortfall, and print faults that only show after washing. Agree a strike-off or lab dip before bulk, and fix a shade tolerance. Test colourfastness on the production lot, not only the sample.

Prices depend on yarn, construction, finish and quantity. We do not publish figures. A real quote needs your spec.

How should you handle samples and approvals?

Ask for a swatch of the exact quality, then a larger cutting of at least a metre so that you can wash, press and test it. For dyed fabric, approve a lab dip first. For printed fabric, approve a strike-off on the real cloth. What a strike-off is explains why a screen of the design on paper is not enough.

Keep the approved sample sealed and signed by both sides. When bulk arrives, compare it with that sample under the same light, and reject the lot in writing if it falls outside the agreed tolerance.
