Indian processing and packaging machines use PLCs, touch-screen HMIs, drives and servo systems from global automation brands as well as Indian and other Asian brands. The brand matters less than whether you can get spares, support and software for it in your country.
Many makers will fit the brand you ask for, if you ask before the design is fixed. Changing it later costs time and reprogramming. Some makers have standard programs written for one brand, so a change can also lengthen delivery.
What sits in a typical control panel
- A PLC, the small industrial computer that runs the machine's logic.
- An HMI, the touch screen operators use to set recipes, start the machine and read alarms.
- Variable frequency drives that control motor speed, and servo drives for precise motion.
- Safety relays or a safety controller that handle emergency stops and guard interlocks.
- Contactors, circuit breakers, power supplies and terminal blocks.
- Sensors, encoders, solenoid valves and, in hot climates, a panel cooler.
Choosing for support, not for the logo
- Ask for a full electrical bill of materials, with brand and part number for every component.
- Check that each main component is sold and supported by a distributor in your country.
- Specify your voltage and frequency, and the electrical standard you need, such as IEC 60204-1 in Europe, or NFPA 79 and UL 508A for panels in the US. See electrical standards by country.
- Ask for the HMI in your operators' language, or at least English.
- If you already run machines with one brand, ask for the same brand so your technicians and spares cover both.
Software, passwords and remote access
The PLC program is part of what you are buying. Agree in the contract that you receive a copy of the program, the HMI project files and any passwords. Without them, a local technician cannot fix faults or make changes, and you depend entirely on the maker.
Some makers protect their program as know-how. If so, agree at least that a backup is held in escrow or delivered on a set date. Also agree how software updates and fixes will be handled after warranty.
Many makers offer remote access through a secure router so their engineers can see the machine from India. This can save days of downtime. It also creates a connection into your network, so involve your IT team. Remote support is covered in remote support from an Indian manufacturer.
Spares for the panel
Electronic parts rarely wear, but they fail without warning. Keep a spare HMI, a spare drive of each size and spare I/O cards if lead times are long. The wider list is in spare parts for processing machinery.
