Non-woven fabric from India is made by plants that bond fibres or filaments into a sheet without weaving, and Gujarat has producers around Ahmedabad and other industrial areas. To buy well, name the process, the polymer, the weight and the end use in your brief.
A non-woven fabric manufacturer in India usually specialises. One plant makes spunbond polypropylene for bags and covers, another makes needle-punched felt for filtration or carpet backing. What non-woven fabric is and how it is made gives the basics.
Which types of non-woven are made in Gujarat?
The main processes are spunbond, meltblown and needle-punching, and each suits a different use.
- Spunbond polypropylene is used for carry bags, agriculture covers, hygiene and furniture linings.
- Meltblown has very fine fibres and is used where filtration is needed.
- Needle-punched fabric is thicker and used for geotextiles, filters, carpet underlay and automotive parts.
What do you need to tell a plant?
A plant needs the weight in GSM, the width, the polymer or fibre, the colour, any additive such as UV stabiliser or flame retardant, and the roll length and core size. GSM ranges available in non-woven fabric shows what is common.
Say what the fabric will do. A fabric for agricultural cover needs UV stability. A fabric for medical or filtration use needs a tested performance level. If your use is regulated, the plant cannot decide the standard for you.
How do you choose between processes?
Match the process to the job. Spunbond gives a strong, light sheet at low cost. Needle-punched gives bulk and cushioning. Meltblown gives filtration but is weak alone, so it is often layered with spunbond. Spunbond, meltblown and needle-punched non-wovens compared explains the trade-offs.
Ask for a sample roll and test it for weight, tensile strength and uniformity. Non-woven weight can vary across the width, so test several points.
What should the order contain?
Write down GSM and tolerance, width, roll length, packing, and test methods for strength. Agree the shipment window, and have the lot checked before it leaves. Costs depend on polymer, weight and quantity, and a real quote needs your specification.
Polypropylene cost follows the raw material market, so quotes are valid for a short time.
Also ask how rolls are labelled and wrapped. Non-woven picks up dust and moisture easily, and rolls without an outer wrap can arrive stained. Ask for a roll-by-roll packing list with weight and length, so you can reconcile it on arrival.
How do you test a non-woven sample?
Cut samples from several points across the width and along the length. Weigh them to confirm GSM, and test tensile strength in both machine and cross direction, since non-wovens are often stronger one way. Check the surface for holes, thin patches and bonding marks.
For coloured fabric, compare the shade with your reference and ask what pigment or masterbatch is used. For fabrics used outdoors, ask for the UV stabiliser level and how long it is rated to last.
