For most Western fashion markets, 16 to 18 inches (about 40 to 45 cm) is the safest length, ideally with a 2 inch extension so one piece covers both. Indian-style sets follow a different logic: chokers sit high, collar sets rest on the collarbone, and long haars fall to the chest or below, so the length is part of the design rather than a size option.
Order lengths by what your customers wear, not by what the workshop has in stock. A mismatch here causes returns that no amount of plating quality will fix.
Standard necklace lengths
- Choker: about 14 to 16 inches (35 to 40 cm), sitting at the base of the neck.
- Princess: about 17 to 19 inches (43 to 48 cm), the most common length for pendants and everyday chains.
- Matinee: about 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60 cm), resting on the upper chest.
- Opera: about 28 to 36 inches (70 to 90 cm), often doubled or layered.
- Rope: longer than 36 inches (90 cm), usually worn wrapped.
How markets differ
Buyers in the US, UK and EU mostly sell princess-length chains and pendants, with chokers and layered pieces as fashion lines. Men's chains are longer, usually 20 to 24 inches. Online sellers do well with adjustable extensions because they reduce sizing questions.
South Asian diaspora shops in all markets buy Indian sets as designed: a choker or collar set for parties and a long haar or combination set for weddings. Gulf and African buyers often prefer bolder, longer and heavier pieces, but this varies by shop, so look at what your own customers already buy. Our guide to which styles sell in each market covers this in more detail.
Building a length mix
- For a first Western order, put most pieces at 16 to 18 inches with an extension.
- Add a smaller share of chokers and long layering chains to test demand.
- For Indian sets, choose by occasion: daily, party and bridal, rather than by length alone.
- State whether the length includes the clasp, and measure finished pieces the same way.
What this means for a buyer
Write the length, the extension and the measuring method into the specification for every design. Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing, and measures samples and production pieces against that specification. Start with a free sourcing review.
