An NABL-accredited lab for spice testing is one that the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories has assessed against ISO/IEC 17025 for specific tests. Accreditation covers only the tests and materials listed in the lab's scope. A lab can be accredited and still not be accredited for the test you need.
Gujarat has accredited labs in several cities, so you do not have to ship samples across the country. Search the NABL directory by location and test.
What accreditation guarantees
Accreditation shows that the lab has a quality system, trained staff, calibrated equipment and validated methods, and that it is assessed regularly. It is a credible signal of technical competence. Read what an NABL-accredited laboratory is for the basics.
It does not guarantee that your sample was drawn correctly, that the result applies to the whole lot, or that the lab is independent of the seller. These are matters of process on your side.
How to check a lab for the test you need
- Ask for the accreditation certificate and its scope, and confirm the validity date.
- Check that the specific parameter, such as aflatoxin or pesticide residues, appears in the scope for the product group.
- Check the method named in the scope against the method your market expects.
- Ask for the reporting limit, since it must be below your limit.
- Check that the report carries the lab's accreditation mark only for tests that are in scope.
Using local labs in Gujarat
Local labs make sense for routine checks: moisture, foreign matter, ash, microbiology and, at some labs, aflatoxin and residues. Specialised tests, such as ethylene oxide, a full residue screen or heavy metals, may be sent to a lab with the right equipment. Ask what the lab does in-house and what it subcontracts.
Local testing also shortens the loop. A result from a nearby lab in a day or two can decide whether a lot is packed or held. For unusual tests, the buyer's market may prefer a lab it recognises, so ask your importer if it has a preference.
Cost and independence
We do not quote testing fees. Cost depends on the parameters, the sample number and the turnaround, and the lab will quote on request. See how lab testing costs per sample for what drives it.
Independence matters more than the saving. A lab paid by the seller and chosen by the seller is a weaker check than one you chose. Send samples yourself or through someone you trust, and keep a retained portion.
Common mistakes with lab reports
Three mistakes cause most disputes. The first is a report from a lab that is accredited but not for the test in question. The second is a report that lists no sampling details, so nobody knows how the sample was drawn. The third is a report that covers a different batch from the one loaded.
Match the batch number, the sample date and the lab's reference on the report to your packing list. A report older than the production date of the lot is for a different lot. Our guide to reading a lab certificate goes through these checks line by line.
