Transit from Mundra to Rotterdam, the UK, the Middle East or Australia is quoted in days by each carrier, but the number you plan on should be the carrier's service schedule for your sailing week, plus the time at each end. This article explains the planning, not a fixed number, because routings and disruptions change it.
Freight cost is the other question buyers ask. We do not quote it. Your forwarder prices each shipment on the day, and the factors that move it are listed below.
Mundra to Rotterdam and the UK
Rotterdam is the main northern European gateway for Indian containers, and many UK services run via continental ports or via a hub. UK ports such as Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway receive direct or transhipped services.
When the Red Sea is open, the usual route is via the Suez Canal. When carriers avoid it, ships go around the Cape of Good Hope, which adds days to the voyage and changes schedules. Read how Red Sea and other disruptions affect freight for the effect on planning.
Sea freight India to the UK: what drives the cost?
Whatever the rate, these factors set it:
- The carrier's service and whether it is direct or transhipped.
- The season and demand on the lane.
- Surcharges that carriers apply for fuel, congestion or route changes.
- Container size and cargo weight.
- Origin and destination charges, which differ by port and are often listed apart from sea freight.
India to the Middle East and Australia
The Middle East is the shortest lane from Gujarat. Jebel Ali in Dubai is reached on direct services, and transit is much shorter than to Europe. Check the destination state's food import rules, as registration and labelling can take longer than the voyage.
Australia is a longer route, often with a transhipment in Southeast Asia or Colombo. Australia has strict biosecurity rules, and containers and cargo may be inspected on arrival. Ask your broker about the biosecurity authority's import conditions for the specific spice before you ship.
Kandla and Pipavav: when to use them
Mundra is the usual choice for container exports from Gujarat because of its service network. Deendayal (Kandla) and Pipavav are the other Gujarat options. Pipavav is a container port with its own rail link, and Kandla handles a mix of cargo.
Which one suits you depends on the sailing, the supplier's location and inland haulage. A supplier in Unjha will often ship from Mundra or Kandla. Our guide to the Gujarat ports for agri exports compares them. Also see how long sea freight takes from Mundra.
Building a realistic timeline
Add up the stages rather than relying on the sailing time alone: production and testing, inland transport to the port, port and customs handling, the voyage, and discharge and clearance at the other end. Each has its own delays.
For a first order, give your own customer a delivery window, not a date. Ask the forwarder for the carrier's current schedule, check which port rotation the vessel follows, and ask whether the service is direct or involves a transfer. A transhipment is where containers most often wait.
Next step
Port choice, cut-offs and documents decide whether your container makes its sailing. We handle those during supervised loading. To plan a shipment to your market, book a free sourcing review.
