Mundra is Gujarat's largest container port and Hazira is the main port for the Surat area. For textile cargo bound for the US, the better choice depends on which carrier services call there, how far the factory is, and whether you ship to the West Coast or the East Coast.
There is no single transit time for Mundra to Los Angeles. Services differ in routing and transhipment, so ask your forwarder for the quoted schedule and treat any rule-of-thumb figure with caution.
What does Mundra offer for textile exporters?
Mundra is a deep-water port with a wide range of container services, which gives more choice of carrier, destination and sailing frequency. It sits in Kutch and is a longer road haul from Surat than Hazira is, but closer to Ahmedabad and Morbi.
Frequent services matter when you need to rebook after a missed cut-off, or when you want a direct service rather than one transhipping at another hub.
What does Hazira offer?
Hazira lies near Surat, so the trucking leg for Surat fabric and garments is short. That reduces handling and haulage. The trade-off is that the number of services and destinations is smaller than at the largest ports, so some cargo ends up transhipped.
Choosing a port for textile exports from Ahmedabad or Surat sets out the practical comparison for each cluster.
How do you route to the US West Coast or East Coast?
Cargo to Los Angeles or Long Beach may go across the Pacific via an Asian transhipment hub, or westward via the Suez route or around the Cape, depending on the service. Cargo to New York or Savannah usually goes westward through the Mediterranean or Cape, or via an intermediate hub.
Ask the forwarder to state the routing, the transhipment ports and the cut-off dates in the quote, and to tell you if the carrier changes the routing after booking. Our note on sea freight times for Indian textiles to Europe and the US covers why times vary.
What should you compare when choosing the port?
Compare the whole route, not just the ocean leg.
- Road distance from the mill or factory, and the cost and risk of that haul.
- Number of weekly services to your US port, and whether any are direct.
- Port cut-off and customs examination practice at origin.
- Free storage days at the destination and the chosen delivery point.
What about Nhava Sheva and other options?
Nhava Sheva near Mumbai is another large container port and is often used for Surat cargo, because it has a wide range of services. Some exporters also truck cargo to Mundra to catch a direct service that Hazira does not offer.
Because services change, the best advice is to ask your forwarder for two or three routings and compare them on total transit, reliability and total cost to your door. Include the inland leg in the US, since rail and trucking from the port can add as much time as the ocean leg for some destinations.
