Imported imitation jewellery usually needs a country of origin mark, the name and address of the importer or responsible person, and a material description that does not mislead. Children's jewellery adds more, such as tracking information in the US and warnings where a hazard remains.
Because jewellery is small, most of this goes on the card, tag, pouch or box rather than on the piece itself.
United States
- Country of origin, for example "Made in India", on the article or, if that is not practical, on its container or card.
- Material descriptions that follow the FTC Jewelry Guides, so plated pieces are not described as solid gold or silver.
- Permanent tracking information on children's products and their packaging, as far as practical, showing the maker, date and batch.
- California Proposition 65 warnings where a product exposes consumers to listed chemicals.
European Union and United Kingdom
Since 13 December 2024, the EU General Product Safety Regulation requires products sold in the EU to show the manufacturer's details and, for goods made outside the EU, an EU-based responsible economic operator. Products also need a type, batch or serial number so they can be traced. Online listings must show the same information.
In Great Britain, the importer's name and address should appear on the product or packaging. Neither the EU nor the UK requires a metal content label on imitation jewellery, but consumer law forbids misleading descriptions, and toy jewellery needs CE or UKCA marking.
Gulf and other markets
Gulf countries commonly require labels in Arabic, or Arabic and English, showing origin and importer. Canada requires importer details and, for some products, bilingual labels. Check each market with your importer or customs broker before printing.
What this means for a buyer
Prepare one label template per market, agree it with the maker before production, and check it at packing. Labels are cheap to fix before shipment and expensive to fix after. Our guide to what a jewellery purchase order should include shows where to specify them.
Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We check labels, cards and markings against your artwork before packing and supervise final packing in Rajkot. Start with a free sourcing review.
