What drives the cost of testing jewellery, and how to keep it down

Jewellery testing is priced per test and per material, so a piece with many components costs more to test than a simple one. Component testing and planning can cut the bill.

The cost of testing a jewellery style depends mainly on how many tests you need and how many different materials the piece contains, because each metal, coating and component is usually tested separately. A plain brass ring is cheap to test. A necklace set with a plated chain, cast pendant, enamel, glued stones and a clasp costs much more.

Labs publish their own price lists and offer volume deals, so get a written quote for your exact programme.

The main cost drivers

  • Number of tests: nickel release, lead, cadmium, plating thickness, and for children's pieces small parts, magnets and other ASTM F2923 checks.
  • Number of materials: every distinct base metal, solder, coating and plating layer may count as a separate test point.
  • Market: a US children's certificate needs CPSC-accepted labs and more tests than an adult piece for the EU.
  • Turnaround: express service usually costs extra.
  • Retests: if a piece fails, you pay again after the fix.

How to keep the cost down

Test components rather than whole designs where the rules allow it. If twenty designs share the same plated chain, clasp and alloy from the same supplier, testing those components once can support many designs. US rules allow component testing for children's products under set conditions, and EU buyers use the same logic for due diligence.

Group designs that share materials into families, and test one representative piece per family plus any unique parts. Screen with XRF first, so you only send pieces likely to pass. Agree materials with the maker before sampling, so you are not paying to test alloys you would never approve.

Costs people forget

  • Courier from Rajkot to the lab, and extra samples the lab keeps or destroys.
  • Repeat tests on production lots, not just on the approved sample.
  • Time: a failed test can delay shipment by weeks while the maker changes materials.

What this means for a buyer

Budget for testing per material family, not per design, and plan it before you place the order. A clear material specification is the cheapest way to pass first time. Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We plan component testing with you, send sealed samples to accredited labs and check that production uses the tested materials. Magnet rules for children's jewellery

Small, powerful magnets that can come loose are dangerous if swallowed, so children's jewellery standards limit magnet strength and test whether magnets can detach.
