What industrial motors are made in Gujarat?

Gujarat makers build three-phase and single-phase induction motors in standard IEC frames, plus flange, gear, brake and special-duty motors. Flameproof motors need certified makers.

Gujarat makers build a wide range of AC induction motors: three-phase squirrel-cage motors in standard IEC frame sizes, single-phase motors for small machines, and variants such as flange-mounted, geared, brake and special-duty motors. Many grew out of the pump industry in Rajkot and Ahmedabad, and many also supply motors to machinery builders.

As with pumps, each maker has a sweet spot. Ask what frame sizes and ratings it designs and builds itself. Some sellers rebadge motors bought from other plants, which makes spares and warranty support harder to pin down.

The main motor types

  • Three-phase totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) induction motors, the general-purpose motor for pumps, fans, compressors and machines.
  • Single-phase capacitor motors for small pumps, workshop machines and appliances.
  • Foot-mounted, flange-mounted and combined mounting versions in IEC frame sizes.
  • Gear motors, where the motor is built together with a gearbox for low-speed drives.
  • Brake motors for hoists, conveyors and machines that must stop quickly.
  • Crane-duty, high-slip and other special-duty motors for intermittent or heavy starting loads.
  • Motors for agricultural machinery such as chaff cutters, flour mills and threshers.

Flameproof and hazardous-area motors

Motors for hazardous areas, such as chemical plants and fuel depots, need special design and certification. In India, flameproof equipment is certified under Indian rules and standards. For Europe you need ATEX certification and for many other markets IECEx, issued by an approved body for the exact design.

Indian domestic certification does not replace ATEX or IECEx. Only buy hazardous-area motors from makers who hold valid certificates for your market, and check them with the issuing body. Confirm the rules for your site with your safety authority.

Standards and efficiency

Export motors are normally built to IEC dimensions and ratings, which makes them interchangeable with motors from other countries. Indian Standards, such as IS 12615 for efficiency classes, follow the same IE classes used internationally.

If your market sets a minimum efficiency, the motor must meet it with test evidence. The EU position as of October 2026 is set out in IE2, IE3 and IE4 motor efficiency. For CE marking, motors usually fall under the Low Voltage Directive, as covered in the LVD and EMC directives.

What to check

  • Rated power, voltage, frequency, poles and duty type on the nameplate and test report.
  • Efficiency class with a measured test report, not just a nameplate claim.
  • Insulation class, temperature rise and IP rating for your environment.
  • Bearing make and size, and whether bearings are sealed or regreasable.
  • Winding material, which should be copper for most export uses.
  • Routine test records for each motor: no-load, locked rotor, high-voltage and insulation resistance.
