How do Indian auto parts compare with Chinese parts?

China offers more scale, range and speed. India is strong in castings, forgings, machined and tractor parts, with a growing role as a second source. Plant quality matters more than country.

China has the larger and broader auto parts industry, with more scale, more automation and faster tooling in most product groups. India is strongest in metal-intensive parts, such as castings, forgings, machined parts, fasteners and tractor parts, and many buyers use it as a second source alongside China.

The country gives you a starting point, not an answer. The gap between a good and a poor plant in either country is larger than the gap between the two countries.

Where China tends to lead

  • Range. Chinese clusters cover almost every part group, including electronics, lighting and plastics.
  • Scale and automation, especially in high-volume pressed, moulded and electrical parts.
  • Tooling speed. Many Chinese toolrooms turn dies and moulds around quickly.
  • Supply chain depth for electric vehicle parts, such as motors, batteries and power electronics.
  • Port and logistics networks with many direct sailings.

Where India tends to lead

  • Castings and forgings, where Indian plants have long experience in grey iron, SG iron and steel parts.
  • Machined parts in medium volumes, with flexible job shops that accept smaller batches.
  • Tractor and agricultural vehicle parts, because India has a large domestic tractor industry.
  • English-language engineering communication and drawing practice that follows European and US norms.
  • Diversification. Many buyers want a second country to reduce dependence on one supply base.
  • Flexibility on smaller orders, since many Indian plants are mid-sized and family-run, with owners who take part in technical discussions.

Trade rules can tip the balance

Tariffs and trade remedies differ by country of origin and change often. In some markets, extra duties on Chinese goods have made Indian supply more attractive. In others, Indian parts face their own duties. Read tariffs on Indian auto parts in the US and EU and check current rates with your customs broker before you compare landed costs.

Quality is about the plant, not the flag

In both countries you will find plants with IATF 16949 that supply global vehicle makers, and workshops that cut corners. The risks are similar: weak material control, skipped heat treatment, poor gauging and quality that drops after the first order.

The checks are similar too. Audit the plant, review its PPAP and control plan, test samples independently and inspect before shipment. See why quality drops after the first container.

How to compare fairly

  • Send the same drawing and specification to suppliers in both countries.
  • Compare quotes on the same Incoterm, payment terms and tooling terms.
  • Include freight, duties, inspection and the cost of carrying stock in your comparison.
  • Test samples from both against the same criteria.
  • Weigh lead time and the risk of a supply disruption, not only unit cost.
